Default Low Oil Light (?!)

I have never seen this light before, I JUST had this engine spec’d and built for me, it was broken in on the dyno with a carb (700hp) and then they tuned it with the MSD Intake, fuel injection, etc...and delivered to me in March I think. Build in Sig.

I appear to have no oil 900 miles later (?!). I have zero oil leaks and my catch can was maybe 1/3 filled when I checked it.

What are the parameters for the “Low Oil Light” indicator ? Should I just send it back to the shop ?

I was supposed to take it to a fishing trip July 4th weekend and I am now totally up a creek on that and the shop can’t even get me back in to look at it until late July. They did the build so I am kind of over a barrel and cannot take it elsewhere.

Below is a pic of my dipstick post removal.

Who filled it initially? Did you check it before? Wondering if enough oil wasn't put in to start with.

Do you have smoke out the exhaust?

AHP filled it when they assembled it and tuned it.

Yes it smokes a ridiculous amount when I cold start it but not when I run it.

Here is what I get when I check the oil....

New engine build...maybe the rings did not seat properly and it's burning a lot of oil? A new engine *will* tend to burn some oil as the engine breaks in and rings continue to seat etc. My built motor had high blowby and it took maybe 1000 miles until it went to what I would call normal levels..ballpark numbers but you get the idea.

A few ways this could progress but either way get in touch with the shop. Get the dialogue going and ask them what you should do...follow their recommendations. That way in case the engine does need re-ringed or whatever, you have followed their guidance to a T and there won't be any disputes or conflict. Sometimes **** happens, get in touch with them and see where it goes.

But what they will probably say is, add oil and continue to monitor oil consumption. Check the oil regularly and note how much you have to add over 500 miles etc etc.

I didn't know these cars had oil level sensors, I see it still has oil pressure so motor is probably OK.

Smoking a bunch on cold start could maybe be the rings not sealing well when cold or maybe the valve seals leak....and a bunch of oil drips into the combustion chamber from the heads after you shut it off and let it sit overnight.

Great advice ^^

I have been in touch with the shop before, during and after the 1 year + build. As I indicated, I have been in contact with the shop on this and they cannot fit me in until late July at the earliest which is a bitch.
Hopefully it is just break-in or blowby but this would be a LOT of oil consumption in 900 miles and the shop did not try to even float that theory. In any event....hopefully not my problem or issue to sort out.

I am not sure adding oil and monitoring it is the right play here. This was not inexpensive. The shop may want to see how much oil is left after 900 miles and they may want to analyze the oil still I it. This was not exactly a head/cam swap. I did have my stock short block re-ringed so I get that but that engine is long gone and now I have this one.

Yep leave it be and let the shop take care of it.

OK they told me to just put in more oil and recommended I put the car under a load (accelerating and engine braking) while driving to assist seating of the rings until it can go back to AHP on July 20th. They did not seem too concerned at all (as long as it was not making any “unusual” sounds) so hopefully this will resolve itself.

Hopefully this is a “normal thing” for a big cube, forged, balanced NA build. Sucks to have my car down again this summer.

Nope, something is not right. I've seen many big cube N/A LSX builds without a trace of oil use.

Agreed, I will let you know what they find out. AHP is overly thorough and took over a year to build the engine so I am a bit surprised but whatever.
