I have a new to me 02 coupe. About every 10 starts it has a dead key. What I mean by that is the key does nothing when I try to start it, no clicks.... nothing. It will read the pull key in the DIC. I got the LMC5 today and installed it and when I started the car the column was locked!! I did the brown wire mod and still locked. I took out the LMC5 and the column was unlocked. I never had the column lock before. I thought the LMC5 was suppose to stop the column lock not create it. I was 10 min to late to call them but I will in the morning. Anyone else have this issue?
What was the condition of the battery, when it goes below 12.5V (with ignition off) the C5 electronics can do weird things. Car can start but often times the 2 mph cutoff will kick in. If so when the battery is dead, the LMC5 has no power to control the column lock among other things. When you restart the car it might be possible that the column was still locked.
Battery was on a tender before I installed it. The PO said the ignition recall still needs to be done but from what I have read it's not advised. Weird that the column locked as soon as I installed it and unlocked when I took it out. Good thing its a reversible procedure...
I had a problem (different one) after installing the LMC5. I had one of the pigtails inserted into the connector 180 deg out.
Difficult to understand how a properly installed LMC5 could cause the column to lock unless it is ;locked to begin with, since there is no source of power to the lock motor. Call Richard at Compliance Parts.
Mine was locked to begin with, the unlocker harness would not unlock it and Richard advised to tap on the lock motor a screwdriver and hammer. Worked, except it was not real easy to disassemble the steering column shroud enough.
I called them this morning, super helpful parts guy that answered. Gave me the info I needed and I just reinstalled it. No more column lock. Now time will tell regarding the pull key message.
You have to unlock the column before installing the LMC5. When I install one I start with inserting the key in the ignition and turn to the on position. I then disconnect the battery. At that point the column is unlocked and I can start installing the LMC5.
You always want the battery disconnected when working on the BCM, too many delicate electronics that can be damaged by voltage spikes.
So I installed the LMC5 after speaking to the tech guy. Super helpful guy! I am still having the dead key issue at times!!!!! I am not seeing the pull key in the DIC but I have to cycle the key a bunch of times randomly.Frustrated!!
You have another issue.
Please pull the codes from the car and post. Post the entire line, the characters before and after the code are important.
However, from the description you are providing the ignition switch may be the culprit. Specifically the contacts that read the resistor pellet in the key. You can try cleaning the contacts on the key with a lint free cloth and a bit of alcohol. If this does not do it then the codes will be important in determining what is happening.

It's easy to bypass the key resistor if you think that might be the issue. Remove the knee bolster and disconnect the two wire connector coming from the front side of the ignition switch and shove a resistor of the same value as the key pellet resistor across the two connector pins. My keys are worn and would occasionally give me trouble, I've had them bypassed this way for more than a year now
Auto or Manual?
Does this happen when the car is Hot or Cold, i.e. after it has run a while does it fail to restart until cooled down?
On the dash, when you insert the key does the blinking security light turn off? If it continues blinking then there are issues with the VATS system.
I did have one guy I helped that had his car at the dealer several times for a similar issue, a 03 Z06.
They replaced several components down the diagnostic tree. Ended up replacing the starter and no more issues.
The no start is cold or hot.
The security light goes out as soon as the key goes in.
I have long tube headers, I wonder if the heat has affected the starter. I am getting a starter tomorrow and while I don't have a lift a friend does so its going to his place for the swap.
