Searching resulted in mixed results. Does the C5 have a heater core bypass solenoid to re-route hot coolant when the AC is trying to cool the car or is that the job of the blend doors? I am curious because if there is no bypass doesn't that mean there is a constant heat source inside the cabin regardless of what the blend doors are doing? If that is the case has anyone installed a solenoid in the effort of improving AC performance?
Can’t guarantee I am correct but I’ve never known of a GM system from that era made by Harrison Radiator/Delphi Harrison Thermal that had anything like a solenoid. Years ago GM systems used to have water flow valves to regulate water flow through the heater. That’s way back. To the best of my knowledge, it’s simply the air blend valve. As long as the blend door seals well, very little heated air will mix with the cold air.
doesn't that mean there is a constant heat source inside the cabin regardless of what the blend doors are doing?
Yes, but it also means there's a source of engine cooling not controlled by the radiator -- you can always turn up the interior heat to help cool the motor. It does work, though it can be a long way from comfotable...
