Re: UPDATE!!!! Column lock EA# WITH THE NHTSA (quimbo)
Could you please let me know why this is still a problem? Didn't GM issue a recall? I know I got my recall in the mail for my '99 -- haven't taken it in yet because it is working fine since I had it fixed two years ago.

I hope they get this issue addressed.....I dread the thought of my column locking while in motion,,,,I understand this has also happened...
Just get your electrical system wet or have your voltage get too low and see what happens.
When my '02 was brand new and I hadn't fully charged the system yet, the battery went low a number of times and the first thing that happened EVERY time was that the column would lock! It was a huge problem on a steep narrow driveway-no steering to avoid the walls and couldn't push it up or pull along side to jump it-CLB was immediate for me. $50K car needs mods on first day! :mad :mad :mad
Re: UPDATE!!!! Column lock EA# WITH THE NHTSA (xtream1)
If you have the issue to be addressed contact the NHTSA LIKE I DID ALONG WITH 36 OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAD THERE COLUMN LOCK ENGAGED
WHILE DRIVING THE CAR. GM MUST BE PRESSURED AND I FEEL WE HAVE BOUGHT ENOUGH ATTENTION TO THE NHTSA AND THIS PROBLEM WILL BE DELT WITH ONCE AND FOR ALL
Re: UPDATE!!!! Column lock EA# WITH THE NHTSA (abigfoot)
Still looks like it doesn't lock up while the car is moving. Failing while parked is a totally different issue and is not a safety problem. I doubt this will go anywhere since nobody has had it lock while driving the car.

I know for a fact that it can lock when driving the car. Because it happoned to me, I was backing out of the driveway, and I almost hit a tree, but I ended up in the grass. I contacted the NHTSA, but they just opened a file, and never got back to me. I know that there are others out there that have had it lock while driving. I think that in an earlier post someone said it happoned to 36 people that he knew of.....Well make it 37!
Re: UPDATE!!!! Column lock EA# WITH THE NHTSA (dendrizzi)
There were more than 36 reports of the car locking up while driving if you had read my origional post you will see it happened to me and alot more people here on the forum. From what I understand there was such an overwellming responce to my origional post they decided to go from 97 to 2001 so lets see what happens I will past origional post

Ok heres the deal I spoke to a Mrs Cheryl Tuosto this morning at th NHTSA there is an investagation going on about the column lock issue. Here is what they want anyone who has had a problem with the column lock to do.
Call 888 327-4236 DOT COMPLAINTS when you call this number you will be interviewed
on the phone here is what they are looking for 1) they need the vin#
2) Auto tranny or manual 3) the mileage 4) the speed you were going and the date
when the steering wheel locked and what was the distance from when you first started the car to when the column lock locked up on you. Please make sure to leave your work and home phone number so someone can get back in if they need to in reguard to your complaint about the column
lock issue calling the 888# that makes it offical and then if they need to talk to you in more detail someone will contact you.
I think we can get GM to repair all these column lock issues now that the NHTSA is involved so ANYONE WHO HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM AND WANTS TO HAVE IT REPAIRED ONCE AND FOR ALL BY GM CALL AND LETS MAKE GM STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND DO RIGHT THING!!!!!!!
GM YOU MAKE ME
