Hello folks. I currently am in the middle of a heads/cam swap and don't like the looks of the motor mounts. I want to swap them out for some factory replacements. I have read on some forums about dropping the cradle, unbolting suspension etc. Is it not possible just to unbolt the top and bottom of the mounts and jack the engine on the oil pan? I have unlimited access with the heads, AC and headers off the car. Input is appreciated.
You can jack the motor yes, thats what I did on a header job. Just get a sturdy piece of wood to spread the weight and go slow. Watch the cowl to IM clearance and don't go too high.
If you are doing heads/cam at the same time, you will have the intake off. I would bolt a lift plate to the valley and use an engine hoist to lift the motor. You will likely have to unbolt the mount/pedestal from the block to get the mount out, which isn't that bad of a job.

Not to be a "Debbie downer", but I would think that the engine hoist, while an excellent way to lift the engine, would be placing it's legs, under the car, right where you'd need to be placing yourself, to access the motor mounts....
To close the loop on this one. I did jack the engine up by the pan. I was not comfortable jacking it all the way up, so I got the weight off the mounts and unbolted the mount to engine brackets. Piece of cake. Took 20 minutes.

Good to know. I think mine need done, and everything I read made it sound like a bear of a job.

The only thing you need from the bottom are the nuts on the bottom of the mount, which I would take out first.
Both the jack and hoist are workable solutions, depends on what you have access to.
Agreed with removing the pedestal, having swapped 4 motors in these cars, we have pulled the pedestal off to allow the more to more freely lift out. The studs on the mounts are longer than they seem.
