Default HUD Help

Hello, So I am installing a HUD in my 2001 Z06, it has the hud enabled cluster. I got the HUD, the switch and the wiring harness. The HUD seems to be working fine, it goes bright and dim and mirror is working correctly, but I am having one weird problem I am hoping you guys can help me with...

As soon as I plug the switch into the cluster none of the DIC lights work at all. None on the HUD switch and none on the other side at all....If I unplug the HUD switch, the lights work perfectly fine on the right side. If I plug in my old switch, all the lights work fine.

Could this be something in the switch? am I doing something wrong? Please let me know if you can help!!

Thanks

I just did that for my car and had no issues. Does it do it when the car is started? I’d assume an issue with the cluster? Make sure the power connector for the cluster is inserted fully.

It’s a great Mod, hood luck!

I am not able to start car to check because I have some other engine stuff in works, but connector is fully pushed in. Unplugged, the DIC lights work..Plug in the HUD switch and all lights go out. I am using LED's in the DIC and HUD, maybe that has something to do with it?

Well, to make EVERYTHING 10x worse... I was messing with it again today, plugged in the HUD switch and the IPS started beeping, and smoke starting coming from the HUD switch... I have now lost power to my Dash lights( they come onwhen I turn key off and pull the key out, but when I turn headlights on it doesn't light up at all. headlights motors (they don't pop up, but they turn on), my Side marker rear lights don't come on, my taillights do not come on but if I hit the flashers they blink. Can someone please lead me in the right direction here? I checked all the fuses I could think that would remotely have anything to do with this, but they are all good? Did I fry the BCM??

Did some more troubleshooting, found a couple different fuses blown in the foot panel. After replacing them all lights are back to working... Now, as soon as I plug in the HUD switch, it starts smoking and blows fuses again. Guess there is a short in the HUD switch.

Ugg man that sucks!

you think it was the hud itself or the cluster?

i got my hud from a member here, works great.

hope someone here can help Troubleshoot further. I may have an extra control for the hud that goes on the left side of the cluster if you think that’s bad?

You mentioned you got "the HUD, the switch and the wiring harness". I take it you mean the wiring harness with the 4 additional wires to connect the IPC to the "new" HUD-Switch, right? Did you make sure that the connector for the IPC end was inserted with the red wire up?

Since you mentioned you can control the HUD, it seems that at least that portion of the HUD-Switch if fine, but what you describe regarding the lights opens the possibility of a short circuit in one of the HUD-Switch's bulbs.

I would suggest removing all light bulbs from the HUD-Switch and try again.

What happens if you plug again your old Dimmer-Switch? Does everything goes back to normal as it did before?

I don't think the BCM is at risk, but your IPC sure is.

Can you list the blown fuses?

That's what I suggested in my previous post, along with a quick test, before reading about the smoke. Can you determine where is it physically originating from?

Thanks for the help gentleman!

So the main fuse that was blown was fuse #6 in the passenger foot well. It is labeled as "PK T/LP". I didn't know this fuse could cause so many different systems to not work. As soon as I replaced it all my lights works correctly again, Headlights pop up, and dash lights come on.

So when I plug my old switch in, everything works fine, no smoke, no blown fuses. After putting the HUD switch in with the wire harness (red wire facing up on IPC) all seemed fine...that is until I turned the dimmer ****... smoke started coming from switch again, and now the dimmer switch is hard to turn. It must be something internal to the dimmer switch causing all my problems. Going to get another and see if that fixes it.

Thanks again!

It seems your HUD-Switch has an internal short circuit affecting its dimmer potentiometer. I would suggest not connecting it again. Things have gone progressively worse and every time you connect it again you're risking more damage.

Please, let us know what happens when you try another HUD-Switch.
