They are usually removed by cutting off and discarding the "downpipe" section of the OEM exhaust system. If you keep the original cats, this does not seem to affect emissions results.

The easiest method of pre-cat elimination is to "gut" them. This means to remove the catalest material, which is actually very easy. The hardest part of the whole job is removing and then re-installing the exhaust system, and that's not too hard either. To remove the materal, I used an extra long 3/8 masonite drill bit and driled several holes in the "brick". Then used the end of a pry bar to break it up. And I finished with a rotary paint stripping attachment to insure all the material was cleaned from the interor of the converter. I fell this is easily the "best bang for the buck" mod for '01 and newer Vettes. I picked up a nice exhaust note and a noticable increase in upper RPM power.

Do it, its easy, you just need some jackstands and a little elbow grease. Youll pick up a nice exhaust not too.

I had mine cut out and had a straight pipe welded in.

if your state does visual inspections (along with the tailpipe test) you may fail the visual if the pre-cats are cut out.
vIf so; then remoping the catalyst material and leaving the pup-cats hollow may be the only way to go.

gutting the C5 pre-cats
