Default Alternator replacement?

A TSB went out for a issue that involved a noise/vibration with the car warmed up stopped in drive - cars 1997-2000 are involved. To correct this issue the alternator and the belt tensioner needs replacing. These 2 items were installed in 2001 Corvettes - this issue occurs in automatics only. I’m not sure what is different about the belt tensioner but the alternator has a harmonic balancer on the pulley. Part numbers are: 10316182 for the alternator- 12568181 for the belt tensioner.
Now I’m curious how many of you have experienced this problem and I’m also curious as how an alternator can cause this issue to the extend
to cause such a vibration like this. Please let me know if this occurred with your car and if you made the corrections - did it work also.
Thanks

I've owned a '00 and now '01 not a problem. College roommate has a 150k on his '00 which over 100k where put on by him. All 3 manual cars no problem.

Corvette can be finicky on alternators. I would not turn yours in as a core, and I have had a local shop rebuild alternators on my '01 and '93. They were both successful. You may want to google search the forum as a member had a great topic on rebuild your own alternator. If you can't find it, post up and I might be able to find it.

Manual transmission cars don’t have the described problem.

It's actually called a decoupler. It acts like a sprag clutch and eliminates belt related issues/NVH on automatics at idle.

The concern with getting an aftermarket alternator is because the voltage regulator has a special circuit that if missing throws charging system fault messages. If you do get an aftermarket alternator, the key is having the correct regulator.

I have an autozone alternator 110 amp and works great, I have more than 14.0 volts all the time at the battery, I do get the charge system fault message, but I just delete it. I still have my original core though. I never had 14.0 volts at the battery with the original Valero.

My 97 C5 in drive i'm getting grumbling vibrations only at idle stopped in drive. Sounds like coming from at driver seat or just behind driver seat area. Mine is Automatic and has 89k miles. I wonder on mine alternator pulley causing this issue. Where can i just buy the alternator pulley? I replaced the serpentine belt tensioner pulley only last year.

You can’t do just the pulley swap - you must swap out the complete alternator with the decoupled. BTW my ‘98 w/37,000 miles is doing exactly what you described - I haven’t swapped out anything yet - still analyzing the issues mine has.

I think you can buy just the decoupler, but it was about 100 bucks and the tools were also about 100 if memory serves, so I just bought the new alternator.

run your car until it’s warm enough to exhibit the issue, then take the serpentine belt off and see if it still does it. If it does - it’s something on your serpentine and there’s a TSB indicating a known problem with auto cars 97-00 and alternator + main tensioner.

I feel the vibration in the steering wheel and the rear view mirror vibrates while backing up and running in gear at a stop light etc.
