rear end whine

getting a high pitch whine out of rear end starting at 50mph. new tires after this started. any ideas?

does not seem to matter. once you hit 50 - it whines no matter what. thanks for the reply.

The usual C5 diff failure. The Bellville washer (or washers) snaps and stop pushing on the clutches and when everything loosens up the clearances in the ring and pinion are wrong and it makes it whine and start wearing out. The only fix is a rebuild. I'm coming up on my 3rd diff but this time I'll be getting an RPM built one with improved bellville washers so I don't have to go through it again. If you ask RPM they'll tell you a diff with 50k miles is on borrowed time. Hard use seems to make them get louder faster in my experience with 2 failed units.
