Default question about roll bars

Hi,
I'm considering adding a roll bar to my C5 coupe. This will happen after heads and cam, and T/C. Does anyone have experience with adding a roll bar to their C5? What issues/suggestions/warnings can you give me?

Thanks for your advise. ;)

Tony: whatever advise you get from Dennis will be noteworthy! Take it!

I had a 5-point cage (NHRA legal) installed this summer (good down to 10.00 seconds flat). A few things to consider:

1. Make sure that whoever does this cage WELDS it to the FRAME. Some
racers have a "bolt-on" attitude. NOT a good idea. Again, this is about
your safety. WELD to FRAME. Period.

2. For your fifth bar (driver's side) you need to decide if you want a swingout
bar (which can be detachable) or a bar that is detachable that is
non-swingout. I recommend non-swingout because you usually need a
longer extension coming down the driver's side that can hit around the
shoulder area. This extension is PERMANENT on a swing-out system and
can be darned uncomfortable. Just my .02 cents.

3. Go for the chromoly instead of steel. Stronger AND lighter.

4. Here is a link to some pics of mine in various stages:

Hope this helps.

Gary

Gary,
Great Pics! Thanks a lot. I'm waiting on Dennis' reply to my e-mail. You guys always come through when I have a question.

Where did you get your rollbar?

Also, I saw in your sig that you have a Quick Time cutout. I suppose that is what I was looking at on the bottom side of your car. Can you tell me more about that? Such as where did you get it, what did it cost, does it work, does it add more hp?

Thanks again for your help.

Gary,
Can you still fit your top in the rear compartment? That'll be very important to me when it's time.

My roll-cage is made by REBS Speciaties in Reseda, California. The designer is the owner, Eric Kardell who builds various types of race-cars from alcohol dragsters, to 9-second street machines, to Bonneville land-speed cars. In addition, Eric and his crew build show-cars as well, so you can always be secure in the knowledge that whatever he fabricates will be well engineered AND meticulously finished. Racers come from around the country for the added benefit of REBS craftmanship.

The cutouts come from Quick Time Performance in New Jersey. Click here: http://www.quicktimeperformance.com

Let me know if I can be of any more assistance. It's nice to give back when so many have given to me

Mike - the answer is "yes". the top still fits in the rear compartment. When working with Eric at REBS, we went over this requirement. With a little work, the angle works out for the placement of the rear support bars which are then welded to the frame.

In addition, he also sent the rear cargo mat/carpet out to an auto-upholsterer to get a nice finished look near the rear support bars. Nice touch.
