I was given a 97 vette coupe that has been at a mechanics for a very long time. It seems he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. It starts, runs, then almost immediately dies. I've been reading up on what it might be and it usually keeps coming back to, it could be a ground. I cleaned the grounds in the engine bay. And it doesn't seem to have helped. It also has a lot of codes which i'll list below. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
10- PCM P1571 HC
28- TCS NO COMM
38- RTD C1780HC

If your mechanic is advanced enough and has a lab scope and a CAN test box see if he #1 can communicate with all of the cars modules with his scan tool and #2 see if he sees a 0-7 volt square wave on the data line which is pin 2 (violet wire)of the DLC...I won’t go into the whole troubleshooting procedure here with you since the car is at your mechanics shop...with all of those U (communication) DTC’s I’m pretty certain you have issues with your class 2 serial data network...you may have either power or ground on the data wire...he can watch this video below !!
I have actually brought it back home from the mechanic. He said he doesn't have time to mess with it anymore. So i'm seeing what I can do with it. Which isn't much lol. I bought a vcx nano and am trying to install the software but I can't seem to get it to work on my windows 10 laptop. Think I might be over my head here?
I don’t know how long the mechanic had the car but it shouldn’t be more than a 5-10 minute diagnosis !!...anytime I have a car that won’t start or start and stalls I also have my scan tool and CAN test box hooked up !!...if you can’t get the scan tool to communicate with the cars modules...“NO COMMUNICATION” ...it’s usually a network issue. If a module (BCM, PCM, HVAC,SCM etc loses power or ground that power or ground can “backfeed” onto the serial data line and give you those issues your having..with the key ON do you see your fuel gauge go to E and your water temp maxes out...also your power windows don’t work and you have all the DIC warnings...”Reduced Power”, Service Engine Soon, Low Fuel ??...a lot of these issues can be traced to the connection in the Driver Door Module...there is a connector inside the rubber boot when you open the door that connects the door to the cars frame...shake that boot and now see if the car starts ??
It was there for 3 years..... Yeah it was my moms car and she just trusted the guy way too much. I finally bugged her enough to just let me go get it and try and fix it. Hate seeing such a amazing car sit and ruin like that. But yes! It does all those things!
If you can find the 2 splice packs to the left of the BCM in the passengers footwell pop the “comb” we call it from the top of the splice pack (squeeze the ends of it pull it off) it is the one with 4 wires as in the video...now see if the car starts !!
You can delete all of those codes now either with a scan tool or through the DIC !!...you have to gain access to that connector and look for any corrosion or loose or bent pins...if not it may come back !

You can tell your Mom you troubleshot it in 5 minutes !!
Yes, take it back and say it didn’t take 3 years but only 5 minutes to fix...LOL !!...just a word of advise...not all mechanics are diagnosticians...maybe 1 in a hundred !!

What your doing is the most difficult part of fixing a car. Most can change mechancail parts if they dont lose the bolts and nuts putting it back together. Ask how i know.

I wouldn't doubt it if she tries! But she is gonna have to fight me for it. I've fallen in love with this car. I've got so many plans for it. But I completely agree about diagnosing, almost anyone can use youtube videos to change parts but the fact that you almost immediately knew what was going on is pretty dang impressive. I think a lot of mechanics hate any kind of electrical gremlins because it takes so much time to figure out. And they can usually slap on parts a lot quicker than the book times. So less time and more money. I don't blame them really. But guys like ya'll, are a special breed I think.

Glad you love the car !!...just do the recommended maintenance items and the car will run like a top for a long time...yes, MANY here say they are not good with electrical but if you have a good grasp on the fundamentals it’s pretty easy to increase your knowledge to where you can become quite proficient !!...there are really only a few types of circuits in a car...potentiometers (3 wires) like TPS sensor, fuel level sensor, thermistors (2 wires)...ECT Sensor and ambient temp sensor, and solenoids (2 wires)...EVAP purge and vent solenoids, fuel injectors, there are pressure sensors (3 wires) which would be MAP, AC pressure sensor...if you understand how they all operate you can apply these to ANY car...if you see how many wires a connector has you can usually figure out what it is !!

Lol I hate talking bad about him because he seems like a nice guy, but yeah he really dropped the ball on this car. It's sad because he left it out in the weather all the time and the already thin clear coat is ruined so it'll have to get painted now.
