Installed a new double din in a 2002 Z06 I recently purchased. Found this on BCM and wondered what and why they would have done this. I have done some searching but not finding much.
Pretty sure that somebody in the past has bypassed the VATS key reader that is part of the ignition switch cylinder, and have installed a resistor that match's the resistance value of the pellet on your ignition key. The white/black strip wire is Ignition key resistor feed, and the purple/white strip wire is the Ignition key resistor return.
So there might be something wrong with ignition cylinder and or keys? If I wanted to tomorrow repair or put back the way it goes. Anything wrong with leaving it this way?
thanks for the quick replies guys. Love this forum
The VATS part of the ignition cylinder has spring loaded contacts which press against the pellet in your key, that sub assembly sometimes get worn out or the small gauge wires sometimes break. Your security system is diminished by the fact that this is bypassed, because now any key as long as it's cut correctly will start your car, many C5 corvette owners have done this bypass due to problems with the key pellet reader sub assembly.
