Default Need Your Opinions Please

Hello,
the ECBM unit in my 2000 C5 is shot. After 20 years with my Vette, wondering if it's time to part with it. It's value is right around 10k and it would cost between 2-3k to get a refurbished ECBM unit put in. Not convinced the cost of the repair is worth it considering the value of the car. Would welcome your opinions. Thank you

To the best of my knowledge, the 2000 ECBM cannot be repaired. You can get a used one off eBay, prices vary on what module you have, either a V or M. If you have a M, there are currently two of them for under $1,000 The V, damn, $1,800

Personally, if I had the M version I'd fix it with a used one. If I had a V one, I'd hunt for one (keep a eye on eBay, call recyclers of C5s like Vettenuts) I have two 99s and someday I too might be in your shoes. If mine went bad, I would NOT sell it. Several of my other vehicles don't have traction control. Even without abs, the Vette would stop way quicker than say my Ford Expedition with abs. Just because the ECBM goes bad doesn't mean you can't drive a C5 as is.

Good advice ... anti skid is nice, but not necessarily a show stopper.

The Corvette recycling place where I picked up my engine a couple weeks ago had a stack of these. I mentioned that they are in high demand, but he didn’t seem to sure about what I was telling him.

It's printed out on the module.

Thank you and checked it out. Unfortunately the serial numbers don't match mine. But will keep checking. My model number is 09360921 for an M unit.

The module failure is common, my 2001 had it when I got the car and I pulled the module knowing it was a repairable error code (C1214). For reference, I got a price of 2000 dollars from a dealer to fix this issue. I sent it to a repair vendor and had it fixed for 200 bucks.

The first step to do your own diagnosis is to go into the DIC through your dash buttons and get the error codes:

If your code from the ABS section of the DIC is a 1214 or 1218, you might have luck with an EBCM repair. Most places do not do the 97-2000 (apparently the components were internally potted in epoxy compound making the job difficult). You can remove the module yourself, its annoying but not complicated.

If the unit is truly lost, ebay is likely your best option. This used one is 1200 bucks, not great but less than I've seen.

Thats the fact your car cars starts and drives and that’s a wire interference.....hence open tapping a metal object ....not the module car wouldn’t run with a spent module

Your two mechanics I bet are wrong ....problem can be resolved with no module replacement.

I have an M unit, so a V is not compatible. Also my error code is C1243. I have not seen anything for my serial # except the $2700 one. I also understand that after 2000, it is more possible to fix that unit. My car was put through the diagnostics.

Well then you know more than the 2 highest rated mechanics, one a GM certified one, from Moorpark CA and the other one in Meridian Idaho.

Your code relates to a abs pump not functioning not a ecbm module ...given the abs and traction control are linked if your abs pump/ module fails then ya your abs and traction control light will be on again it’s not a module but still a expensive fix if you want new parts otherwise check the wrecking yard for stuff you need

V model = with Active Handling
M model = without Active Handling
(And as knewblewcorvette pointed out, the code will show on the module itself).
