Traction control delay???
I pulled out of a sidestreet onto a one way street today and misjudged some traffic so I punched it while making the turn. The car spun the tires enough to get a little sideways BEFORE the TC kicked in:eek:. Is this delay normal:confused:? I would have thought it would have kicked in as soon as tire spin was detected. Anyone else had this happen? The car is a 98 vert with 19k miles. I've never hammered it this hard before.
Before anyone slams me on pulling out in traffic :nono: :smash:, the street I pulled out onto is a 35mph zone on a blind curve with a hill. The left lane was clear until a speeding car switched lanes just as I started to pull out. I was past the point of no return so the only choice I had was to use the hp on hand. Thanks in advance for any and all replies. :flag :seeya
It sounds more to me like the active handling took control. If you are sliding sideways, TC is only going to stop wheelspin, where AH will apply the brakes at the necessary wheels to stop the slide. I believe AH does not kick in at the first sign of trouble because it would be too intrusive, thus allowing agressive driving, but keeping you out of the trees. As for TC, I get good amounts of wheelspin on a hard 1-2 or 2-3 shift even with the TC on, and the wheelspin is over before the TC kicks in. No big deal, really. If you really spin them good, say from a stop or on ice, TC will step in and stop the fun.
97 and 98 have this issue, and i experienced it too often :D :D
We don't have AH, only TC, and it kicks in only .5 or 1 second after wheelspin starts.
During this period, you can get the car SIDEWAYS   . my 'best score' is about 50 degrees off.
Then the system cuts power, just when you need some of it to put the car back in line :mad :bb :mad
If you know what you're doing i suggest putting TC off, so you can control your slides better :blueangel:
Is there any solution to have a "fast TC" ?
You can program A4 shifting speed, why not TC delay
Yes, there is a slight delay before TC kicks in. Once you get used to it, it's fun, because you can get it sideways knowing the TC will come on and straighten you out. Shut it off if you really wanna play, , but be careful or put it in competition mode to leave AH on (if you have it).
Actually the cut in varies quite a bit. Sometimes all it takes is for one of the rear wheels to slip a little or have slight difference in wheel speed due to a surface irregularity and TC immediately cuts power. Other times it will allow both rear tires to spin enough to get a little fishtailing. By the way, the act of T/C controlling rear wheel power by either braking both rear wheels, cutting power or doing both will stop the car from sliding sideways in a power oversteer situation. Its the same principle that they taught you in driver training class in high school.

Re: Traction control delay??? (Bill Dearborn)
Thanks everyone. The shut down was a little scary but all went well. Next time I'll assume someone will change lanes and wait until they go by. I do like the TC and it has been very beneficial in wet road conditions.
This slight delay is great! Compare it to the BMW system, which immediately cuts power so much that the car really bogs down. Even with a very slight amount of wheelspin, the car just about stops. I always turn off the TC in a BMW before any spirited driving, while I almost always leave it on in the Vette.
