The tensioner is upper-most pulley on the car, passenger side. Mine started to come apart this past weekend at the Snowbird Nationals during qual runs. (ran a 12.39 @ 113 after the belt threw around the 1/8th mile mark) and it threw the belt....got up to 245 degrees by the time we were back up the return road. I had to wedge a washer under the underside of the unit to get the belt to ride straight. Like mentioned above, 2 15 mm bolts and you just need to slide the belt off of it to replace.
The Tensioner and the Idler pully are two different things. The Idler pully is to the upper right of the water pump, and is about 2.5 to 3 inches in diamater.
Well, I just pickeed one up over lunch. Let's hope this does the trick. I hope someone can post detailed instructions on removing and installing one... Or is it THAT easy - removing the bolt, undoing the belt, putting on the belt, and tightening the new pulley...
You will need a 15mm socket on a long socket wrench/breaker bar (The longer the better). On the passenger side on the front of the motor you will see the drive belt tensioner. Simply rotate the bolt on the drive belt tensioner pulley clockwise to relieve tension on the belt and remove. You can now replace the idler pulley.
Make sure you note belt routing prior to removal.
While your at it, could you please tell me the GM part number printed on the drive belt.
There is a difference between an Idler Pulley and Belt Tensioner Pulley. It seems like most people are referring to removing the belt tensioner pulley - quite easy. The Idler pulley is on the driver side- far below the alternator. This looks like a helluva work to get it replaced.
