Default Crank Bolt Movement

Been fighting a belt high pitched “whine” under heavy acceleration and now a chirp that has turned into a squeal. The chirp/squeal is before it gets warmed up. I have cleaned all my pulleys, all pulleys look perfect in alignment, and gave a new belt to put on.

question is, with no belt on, and in neutral, should I be able to move my crank bolt counter clockwise/clockwise maybe a 16th of an inch with my fingers?

thanks!

Ahh, no since the balancer is a interference fit with no keyway to hold it in place if the bolt is that loose the balancer is probably slipping on the crank. Not a good situation

If you have the strongest fingers in the world and the crank is turning with it yes, in all other cases no, the bolt should in NO way be loose.

It’s not like it’s loose to where I can screw it out. It just rocks clockwise/counterclockwise a tiny bit, maybe a 16th of an inch. I can get a wrench on it at an angle just to see if I could loosen it but it wouldn’t budge. Of course I didn’t have enough leverage but if it was loose it would have unscrewed I would think. I’m going to retry once I have the belts back in and in gear.
thanks!

If the stock bolt is loose in any way it must be replaced - it is a torque to yield - there is NO retightening.

Are you moving the bolt AND the inner hub of the balancer? That's a real no-no!! I would pull the rack, and try removing the bolt. Something is very wrong. Can you see the headof the bolt? If it's a hex headed cap screw, it's probably the stock bolt. If it's a black headed 12 point headed bolt, probably an ARP. Either way, you need to get this resolved-SOON!!

More to the story. After I got the new belt on and cranked it up everything is nice and quiet now. However, I can now, with my fingers, rotate the bolt left/right almost a complete revolution. I imagine if I could get a socket on there I could continue loosening it. Harmonic balancer is on there solid. Having it looked at in a week or so when I can get it in. Going to do a cam at that time as well.

thanks for all the responses!👍

I’m betting that the bolt is cross threaded rather than the crank being bent. It takes a hell of a lot of force to bend a crank.
