I recently saw a performance show where they used air bags instead of shocks and springs as a performance improvement. Can someone explain if and how this works? It seams to me it would be very one sided as far as the suspension was concerned. I am building a street rod with the C5 drivetrain. Since it is being narrowed I am forced to use coil overs. I have no issue with coil overs, but if its not the best bang for the buck Id like to understand why?
Air bags are made by various folks. Firestone is about the most popular. They are the same bag that is used on a big truck. They have a 1million mile warranty (they never wear out).
The nice thing about bags is you can set the ride height at any time (provided you have air). You can raise or lower the vehicle in any way shape or form dpenedind on the number of valves you use. http://www.airride.com/toc.htm
For a street rod it would be the hot ticket. You can set the frame on the ground when you get to a show for the slammed look. When you are ready to leave. Hit a lever and instantly get 8" of ride travel back.
Plus bags ride nice....
