I'm going to install the Grand Am cam (239/251, 0.570", 106 LSA) and Scoggin-Dickey CNC LS6 heads ( milled 0.055") on my '01 LS6. Scoggin-Dickey says I need to flycut the pistons 0.050" - 0.060". Would it be better to flycut the stock pistons or go with aftermarket pistons ?
Dealer will be re-ringing the motor ('01 Z06 - 8000 miles) under warranty and says I can ship out the stock pistons to flycut - of course they won't warrany this.
If I went with aftermarket pistons could the dealer insert these, instead of the stock pistons, without honing?? ( No honing is done with the oil consumption re-ring). All responses and help are greatly appreciated!
Have the dealer install the 2002 coated pistons while they are in there (and fly cut them):yesnod: These pistons were developed to eliminate piston slap...Only replace the #2 compression rings and oil expander rings.Re-use the oil rings and #1 compression ring and DONT hone the block,or you will not solve the consumption problem...
For the pistons, flycutting will be fine, but I have to make a comment about that cam. Is there some reason that you are choosing this cam? I really do not think this cam is going to work worth a didly. You are not going to get great HP number and the car is going to run pretty rough around town if you can get it to run around town. A split that large in intake and exhaust would be good for a 700 HP shot of juice in an LS1/6 engine....

Holy shiznit, that cam choice is TOO radical, ESPECIALLY for a stock bottom-end motor!!! It would even be on the hairy edge in a big cubed LS1 (422+). I cannot imagine you getting 106 lobe centers to idle around town very good, if at all. you'll literally have a ton of raw fuel going out the exhaust. Plus, you're shaving .055" off LS6 heads? Are you shooting for 12:1 CR? What is your application here?
As far as the pistons go, :iagree: with the others.
Let us know how you get that cam dialed in!!!! Those of us that have spent a great deal of time on/off the dyno with Edit will be dying to know.
