Default Cam Sensor Solution? - Early C5

Hi all,

So the camshaft position sensor has been discontinued for the 1997 corvette.

Does anyone know of a replacement or a some work around beside chnaging the timing cover and relocating?

Thank you!

I'm assuming you got the "discontinued" info from the stealer. Some are more helpful than others. Did they do a nationwide dealer search for NOS sensors? If not, you could try C&S Corvettes, Vettenuts, or other Corvette salvage companies. I believe if you were to change the timing cover, you would also have to change timing chain and gears, but I'm not 100% sure on this. The sensor has to have something to send it a signal, like the original sensor location uses the "diffuser ring" ground onto the camshaft itself. Perhaps someone else could chime in on that one. But if you want to keep everything as is, and can't find a new one anywhere, there has to be some good used sensors out there somewhere. Are you saying that the '97 sensor is a one year only part? Good luck.......

Thanks for the reply Grinder11,

I have an upgraded timing chain/gear set already that has the pick up on it as It was part of my engine build last year.

I really dont want to have to disassemble all that is required to relocate to the timing cover if not necessary, and if I do replace the sensor it sure would be nice to replace with new not used.

I have searched many places for a cam sensor, and evrywhere in have looked says discontinued and no other part number suggested.

I cant say for sure I need one but if i can find a new one im gonna get it,

Its frustrating that GM as well as aftermarket companies have dropped production on so many components for these cars with no support.

Thanks

Agreed on no support! Again, are you saying that the '97 is a 1 year only sensor, or are all LS1/6 cam sensors the same part number? I wouldn't worry about a used sensor. They either work, or they don't, and it isn't a huge job to change them out. Vendors are usually pretty good about sending another part if the one they sent you first is bad, or fails right away. Who verified that the sensor is actually bad? It could be in the wiring somewhere. I once had that happen, where the wiring from the sensor chafed enough that the insulation wore through and set a DTC. Car was hard to start, for sure, but it eventually would after enough cranking! Anyway, I don't think they're a high failure rate item. I've personally never had a failure. Has your stealer searched nationally for the sensor?

I have not confirmed that the sensor is faulty. But when i built my engine I lost my sensor and had to purchase a used one because I could not find a new one.

Im not saying I have a bad sensor, Im really just fishing and trying to find a solution just in case.

I do have to crank the engine over a bit before it will start sometimes.

The 1997 and 1998 vette share the same part number. The 99 up are a diiferent part number.

No stealership has not been able to help me.

And while removing the intake and related components is not that big of an issue, I still only want to do it once if necessary.

Thanks
