Your last sentence makes me wonder if you have a connection problem. It might be at the battery connections or at the starter connection. I've personally had the connection fry at the starter on my 99 (has long tube headers) resulting in a no start condition. You have a 2001 so it uses the side terminals of the battery where it can be hard to get the connectors to seat right. I'd check those two places.
Your comment about playing with the cables then it started may be a clue.
Make sure that the side terminal, cable connections are tight. Factory Service Manual says 11 foot pounds. You cannot get a torque wrench in there, but good and tight.
Some batteries have been found to have shallow side terminal threads and even when tight, do not make a good connection. If you can move the cable connection at the battery by hand, try adding a washer so that when tight, the cable connection at the battery cannot be moved by hand.
Check the cables themselves as well as their connections on the frame and starter. Clean and tight. You may have to remove the battery, disassemble and clean the frame connection. Use dielectric grease on all connections before reassembling. Note that a connection that appears clean and tight may be bad. The only way to tell is to disassemble, clean and dielectric grease before reassembly.
Check the ground connections to the engine block and heads. Anything that can be moved by hand needs to be disassembled, cleaned and reassembled with dielectric grease. Any connection showing corrosion products- same.
