Default 2001-2002 A4 guys

Well, Dad went out and decided he wanted to hang with his two sons in the world of speed again. He bought a 2001 A4 with about 11K miles.
I know there is a big difference in performance between the M6 and A4 so I really would like info from the A4 guys.
If you have any info on before and after times or dyno numbers for each mod, can you start listing them?
We have to start somewhere I guess.
Thanx

Actually, stock for stock, there isn't much difference. In first gear and with the performance axle, the A4 has 5% superior gearing than the M6, thus counteracting the torque converter's additional loss. After that the A4's quick shifting keep it competitive. It really comes down to how well the M6 driver shifts.

Once you start getting into mods, however, the M6 is superior unless you mod the automatic transmission as well.

Get a torque converter, new rear gears (3.42), and a CAM swap. You will love to run against the M6.

Those mods will also put you running in the low-mid 12's on run-craps.

Stock for stock, it will depend greatly on how good the M6 driver is.

As mentioned above, the "stock" difference between the A4 and the MN6 isn't that great. The MN6 is probably more fun to drive, but I love my A4.

I estimate that I gained 15-20 RWHP by adding a Vortex cold air induction and by adding a Borla Stinger exhaust system. Most of this gain, however, was from the Vortex.

I think the bigget single change (other than Nitros or an SC) is 3.73 rear gears. Do that first then see where you stand. BIG Difference.

A good torque converter SY3500 if your'e going to be running street tires or an ST3500 if you are going to run DRs and 3.42s or better yet 3.73 gears will make a tremendous difference in your cars performance.

From a 2002 C5 A4 owner, here is my experience since January of this year:

1. Absolutely bone stock after 400 miles on odometer:
Dyno - 294 hp/297 tq
Strip - 12.73 @ 108.5 mph best (cool, perfect weather conditions in Febr.)

After install of 3500 rpm Vigilante, Bassani x pipe, Corsa Touring exhaust and Blackwing filter

2. With above mods in November:
Dyno - 313 hp/327 tq
Strip - 12.298 @ 110.2 mph

Weather perfect with DA = -1200 feet

3. With above mods in hot 2700 ft. DA in July, I ran 12.44 @ 108.6 mph

Now, the mods will get expensive, if I want to go faster. But, of course, that is a given!

Enjoy! :D

Thanx for all of your input. I know I have to do something. After having 2 M6 trans ams, this will be my first experience working with an A4. I am amazed at the performance gain with a torque converter. I know almost everything there is to be known about the LT1/LT4 engine. Now I have the reason to learn about the LS1. Is the LS6 hotcam a good cam in conjunction with all the other mods you mentioned? With the emergence of the imports, I can't have dad out there getting beat by heavily modded turbo eclipses or talons. Most of the mods I will probably get done without his knowledge.
