Fuel pump noisy...common problem??
Just got a 2002 with only 6000 miles on it and noticed a relatively loud whirring type of sound coming from behind the drivers seat when I first turn on the key. It only lasts for a second or two then stops. This corresponds to the pressure up cycle of the fuel system in preparation to start. When I start the car the noise is there all the time. It's not bad enough to be heard when rolling but I can hear it when sitting at idle.
I had a 99 a couple of years ago and remember some talk about this problem being a working but faulty fuel pump. If I remember correctly the 97 and 98 had some service recalls for this problem. I was hoping that by 2002 they would have solved it forever. Is this noise common and if not, is it worth taking to the dealer to get replaced or is everybody living with what I hear?

Don't think this is normal. I've only heard noisy fuel pumps in '97s. You might want to take it in, but be ready for the dealer to say, "They all do that." You may need to listen to one on the showroom floor.

I haven't heard the characteristic whine of a failing fuel pump on my 2002 vette, yet. I think I know the sound you describe, because I heard if from the rear of my Camaro when the fuel pump was going **** up. Another symptom of fuel pump trouble was the inordinate number of cranks it took to start the engine.

From what I have read and heard from other vette owners common problem my 98 does it all the time I have had it since May. This along with the fuel gauge failing is something that GM refuses to address along with the column

I had the pumps replaced on my 97 twice. They are definitely noise in that era, but I don't know if this is an issue still in 2002.
