have a code 1287, steering wheel sensor code. reset it and comes back, not sure what to look for.. i did have the steering wheel off and
replaced with a custom built one, same basic wheel, just thumb grips and flat bottom, the wheel was straight when i took it off, so i thought
but didn t seem to matter, because it would only go on in one position. when i drive it, it is just a hair off center, am thinking it is off by 1 spline,
but, it seemed to only go on in one place. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks Al
1287 is steering wheel position sensor. Not an easy fix unfortunately.
yea, i know the code is that, but i can t believe is the sensor, had this happen once before when had the 4 wheel alignment,
disconnected the battery for awhile and was clear, but since i had steering wheel replaced, it came back. Has to be
something simple.

it's a long shot but did you really clean connections??
Be prepared to rip out the dash ...will take some effort getting at that sensor and then only then you may or may not have trouble finding a new one ....

unfortunately, when these electrical issues start happening, it starts out slow and then gets worse. There’s no easy fix. The code says what’s wrong. Unplugging the battery just delays the problem. Gotta replace the switch.
Early C5 SWPS ('97-'00) are no longer available. Production discontinued in 2012. Available used only, usually a good one, all center pinned and ready to install, is around $500.00, give or take. Try Marc Rose at Vettenuts, or Lyle@C&S Corvettes. Good luck. BTW....I think there's a sticky about a guy who installed a new 2001-2004 C5 SWPS on his earlier model C5. That or the EBCM, which is also discontinued on the '97-'00 models, available used only, except it is around $1,500.00!!!

the dash does not have to come out to replace the sensor.

yeah, I’ve read those recommendations too. Burnouts, unplug battery, clean the sensors with a whole can of electrical cleaner, etc etc. but 1287 is the sensor. Only fix is to replace it.

Yes, the '01 thru '04 are still available new. I'm not sure you'll find one for $100, but who knows......
it gets real fun when you’re driving and the steering whee randomly jerks before the code is thrown. Haha. My passengers always freaked out.
yeah tell me about. 1000hp redlineing in 4td gear and this happen to me. 3 lane hyw I was n center lane and it did this to me. If there was a car in front of me in the first lane I would not be here on this beautiful planet. I took fuses and this will never happen again.
