Re: HUD - Special Windsheild Required??? (BostonVette)
Yes, its marked HUD on the glass and you can see a small square area that reflects it. People use the hud without it though, I think GM does it so no one else can see it except the driver..
From a post a year or so. a guy went to the plant who manuf the windshields. He stated the HUD windshield is a bit thicker at the bottom than the top. this is due to a tappered inner layer of the plastic stuff that bonds the two glass pieces together. this tapper makes the focus of the HUD be what it is. I will look for the article as I printed it off. As I have read on past posts, people have used a regular windshield with HUD and not seen any difference.

You can definately see a square outline where the HUD reflects if you look for it, its also doesnt reflect much outside the square. What exactly they do I dont know but there is something there..
My dad got a crack in his windshield. Guy said it would be $1000-$1200 to replace it. Those things are expensive. We finally found a guy for $800. Didn't bother though. After I wrecked it, we got insurance to pay for it. So something good did come out of it.

$0 deductible good...costs me about $40/year...sometime in the next couple of years I figured I'd have a glass claim, so even a $100 deductible didn't make sense...
The HUD windshield is different, but not necessary for HUD...mine looks exactly the same as my boss' 01 w/ factory HUD glass...
Re: HUD - Special Windsheild Required??? (PaceThis)
$0 deductable comprehensive is the way to go, especially as easy as this windshield chips :)
It would be interesting to park a two cars next to each with a HUD with and without the HUD windshield and look at them both. Its hard to tell but it looks like the glass is distored a tiny bit in a 12"x12" or so square above the HUD. It may be just the reflection from the HUD lens - its hard to tell. You would think there was some difference - as long as they both work thats what matters
The special HUD class is mentioned in the video that came with my 2001. I am going to try to spell this but don't blame me if I am way off. It is called an anti-lasative coating. It is intended to reduce glare and make the HUD image clearer.
A while back, after breaking a windshield, some tried switching to the '01 Z06 windshield (HUD was not available on the Z06 at the time) to save weight (Z06 windshield is thinner). They reported a clarity loss in the HUD image.
