Default Converting Auto Trans in C5 ZO6

Has anyone ever converted their 6 speed ZO6 to an auto 6 speed, 8 speed or 10 speed? I had promised my grandaughter years ago my C5 ZO6 when she was a very young girl...I really don't think she wants to learn how to drive a 6 speed hence my question...I was wondering what mods have to be done to their car...Thanks in advance.

You will need: flexplate, torque tube, trans, converter, front and rear bellhousings, tranny cooling lines, A4 radiator (or external cooler), shifter and cable, brake pedal. Plus wiring harness changes, ecm programmed.....

Just some of the things I copied from LS1 tech. Big job

Hi Greg,

If the car is in good condition I would sell it, buy her an automatic and with the extra money pay her insurance for a good long while. A Z06 is worth considerably more than an automatic and that cash difference could make a big difference in her life and she would still have a vette.

Be certain the transmissions you're interested in swapping will fit without cutting up your floor, if that bothers you. I wanted to go with a 4L80E on my C5 when I went to the built LS7. I was told it can't be done unless you cut up the floor in places for the extra clearance needed. I didn't want to do that, so I dropped the idea. It CAN be done (the 4L80E), but it's a job, or $$ if farmed out......

IMO, she needs to learn to drive it as-is if she really wants the car. Otherwise I agree with Autoeng to trade it for an automatic.

I hear you. Wish somebody would offer me a 6spd C5, with only stipulation being learning to drive a 6 speed, which I can!!!

So, I’m also in the camp of “be a great grandpa and teach her to drive a stick”.

That said, the 4L60 swap is pretty straight forward. While it’s “only” a 4 speed auto, it’s a good transmission for a basic build.

It can be done in your driveway, if you’re resourceful and mechanical... otherwise, best to ship it to someplace like RPM Transmission for a professional swap.

Best of success to you.

This was intend`ed with the question, will a 6, 8, 10 fit?...I know what parts it will take so thanks for that...I could buy her whatever she wants so i wouldn't buy her a used C5 as the intent is to give her my pristine 20K mile C5Z as I don't need it...Thanks for all the input.

Yes, as you, and the rest of us already know, the 4L60E will fit just dandy. Since you want to go with the 6, 8, or 10 speed auto, THAT is why I suggested making sure those 3 trannys will fit without cutting up your pristine floor/car. As I mentioned, the 4L80E will NOT fit without a lot of floor cutting. I realize it wasn't listed as a tranny you wanted to go with. I only brought it up because seeing as it's only a 4 speed automatic, it's probably physically smaller than a 6, 8, or 10 speed automatic, and if the 4 speed auto won't fit, the 6, 8, and 10 speed auto's will probably require even more floor cutting.... .

not cheap to do but a very good mod if you want an auto z

rpm did mine and with a level 6 4l65e, precision convertor, 12 mm torq tube, wiring, tune, it was just over 7000

rodney helped me sell all my parts and netted 4500 as the car had a built tranny

car went from 10.5s to 9.8s, more than happy to hook the power on the ttix 800 rwhp build

tranny is still going strong many years later (mostly street miles)

And that's what I was looking for, thanks very much.
