I would think the ECU has to match the motor

I'm not an expert on engine swaps, but I imagine it needs to match the engine that it's controlling.

There should be some sort of number on the ecu you currently have. More details would be helpful. What year is your car, and what 5.3 engine is in it.

It’s possible whoever did the swap could have used the ecu from the new engine, but I’d imagine they used the one that came with the car.

As far as where to get one, ebay is a good option. Could find one from a junkyard as well depending on which ecu you need, likely 0411

I find that a little strange. I would think the size of the engine is not important here, but that it thinks it's an LS and 8 cycliners. After that, it's just programming for the ignition/fuel/air table and such. I could see you needing a new program tune done on it, but not an ECU.

Because if you swap the ECU, you need to make sure that whatever ECU replaces it still is aware of all the other items it interacts with. Like all the sensors. And what Tooth reluctor, O2 types, and such.

I'd say find out what the engine might have come from so you have the specs, but I think it's easier to simply have a tune done on the existing ECU.

But if you do a swap you will need to compare what is different so it can be programmed out.

I’ve drove the car months with that engine in it so I think it went bad so you think I should get the one for the engine

What happened that made her say you need a new ECU? In any case if the ECU is bad the easiest thing to do is get one that matches your cars Vin and then get it tuned. You should also ask this question in the scan and tune section. Someone in that section has done this and would better be able to help you to figure out what to do.

For the ecu, any 4896 or 0411 will work.
You will however need to program it for your year of car. Including your VIN number.
The 5.7 tune will run a 5.3 just fine with some tuning.

What is the issue with your ecu that it needs replaced?

How does the 5.3 compare to the 5.7 in the Vette?
I have a 2007 GXP Grand Prix with the factory 5.3 in it and it will push that tank pretty good, if only it was not front wheel drive. I have gone through 2 axles and 2 steering racks.
