1997 A4 Trans shifting problem code 1860 Trans Component Slipping
I keep getting a code 1860 transmission component slipping along with very hard shifts When I start the car (cold) the trans shifts fine but when warmed up the check engine light illuminates and the trans shifts very hard. HISTORY: I have installed a Pro Torque 2400 stall converter, Lingenfelter ported heads, Comp cam, and the (then) stock computer up-graded by Lingenfelter. Everything was fine, 1 year latter and about 500 miles, I decided to install 3:73 rear gears. Because Lingenfelter was busy at the time I sent the PCM to TPIS to recalibrate for the rear change. When I drove the car the "check engine" light came on with my first 1860 code. I contacted TPIS who agreed to recalibrate the PCM again to deal with the 1860 (Trans Component Slipping) code. The code continued, I had GM check out the trans and found no problems ( the hard shift problems was not apparent at the time). The trans does not slip and operates normally except for the very hard shifting. It has been suggested that my problem probably is still in the PCM software. Do I have a transmission problem, computer problem or torque converter problem?. What would would you recommend as a solution?. If the PCM should be recalibrated who would you suggest to do the work?.

You do not have a mechanical problem. The computer needs to be reprogrammed for the 3.73's. It needs to be done using the newest version of LS-1 edit. If it was programmed on the older version, it needs to be reflashed to stock and then read and reprogrammed. Try Ed Wright for programming :seeya

If it's really a P1860 you could very well have a mechanical problem. My bet though is that you have a P1870 and it's just a programming problem. If they are using LS1-Edit, Chris is correct it needs to be done using v1.1 or later (v1.21 is current.) I hinted at how you could verify that it's a programming problem in the thread Joseph pointed you at. If it turns out to be programming, I would expect whoever did it to get it right, particularly if they've done any other true tuning work. The hard shift is a side effect of the code. Good luck, I suspect you'll enjoy your gears very much when this is resolved. :)
