Harmonic Balancer Install Clarifications (Before tomorrows Install)
Have a 99 C5 with 42K that is stock besides an air intake. HB was wobbly for awhile and finally blew it up the other day on a short drive. The HB bolt came loose and the pulley backed off the engine enough to throw the AC belt, but keep the serpentine belt in the middle. I stopped and got it towed so not to do any damage.
I have read most of the HB threads (Printed Scottunger's for the install tomorrow) and have acquired all of the parts for the install attempt this weekend. My friend is a very seasoned mechanic and has a shop so I am in good hands. Had a couple of things I was hoping to clarify:
1. My Understanding: Engine is internally balanced. Meaning the new HB can just go on crank shaft with no special alignment and no key? (Using PowerBond PB1117N)
2. Using ARP Bolt - Torque spec is 240 ft-lb lubed? I saw a lot of discussion and disagreement on this, so wanted to check.
3. Using new National Seal - Opinions differ on difficulty. Seems like it is a case of go slow with the bolts on the case to make sure the seal is aligned before tightening
Feel free to add anything you think would be helpful.
Thank you!
Regards,
Mac
2. as per ARP instructions 235lbft with the inculded ultra torque lube.
3. your taking a chance of misalignment without the tool, your call

2. Follow ARP Instructions.
3. If it's not leaking, don't mess with it. If you want to 100% do it properly, you're going to need to loosen the oil pan up also as the two lower vertical bolts go through the oil pan. I would probably just R&R the seal without loosening the cover if it needs to be done. Some people swear by the alignment tools, I've never used one and never had a leak. Just be patient, careful, and cautious and it'll be fine.
