After some serious hassles with TT and driveshaft, my mechanic told me my shaft was bent. Out of rage to get things moving, I ordered a DSS carbon fiber. Went to install today and now he's telling me it's almost .5" longer than the stock? Wtf.
I have to call DSS in the morning, I also have to verify the shops measurements.
But since CF shafts have prebuilt coupler ends, I'm thinking a good machine shop could mill and check balance while they are at it?
I ordered a custom driveshaft from DSS a while back for my project and told them it needed to be exactly 6.5" longer than a stock 2004 M6 C5 driveshaft. The one I received was about 7" longer than my stock one so I wonder what they're using for their stock measurements. I didn't realize it until well after I received it given where I was with the car project at the time so I didn't have any recourse with them. I ended up making a custom coupler to replace one of the rubber ones and that seems to be working but it was a big hassle.
My mechanic and I both spent over an hour on the phone with them this morning.
their file spec size is clearly off.
I'm looking at machining 1/8 off each end of the aluminum.
total hassle
Crazy that one of the bigger names in aftermarket driveshafts would have such an issue. You would think this would have been corrected at some point but maybe they just don't sell that many C5 driveshafts?
According to the guy my mechanic spoke to, while I was standing there. They have 54 of them on the road.
how many people said F it, and sorted it out on their own is unknown.
So there isn't a way to chuck it in a lathe to mill the end. My mechanic made his way through and got what I think is the owner.
they claim they will have the rreplacement made to spec and out on Monday. I have the other one set to return.
points for them offering to rush, but it took allot of time to get to someone who offered. All the desk techs kept saying way 2 weeks plus.
Once we got the right guy, he immediately said " yeah we have had issues with this". So why they sell it as is, knowing there's an issue I have no idea.
Long story short, I'm not sure you can order a CF shaft ahead of time for a swap. Need the TT off to measure.
Shaft is in. Car back together. First impression, it does feel different. I'll hold off on that part until I have some miles. Now, there is some vibration. It'd honestly not bad considering it's solid with no couplers. I'll update as I drive it more.
So I drove quite a bit yesterday. Likely again today. I had the dash and center console apart to replace the hvac controller too. I think the source of vibration noise anyway was hastily installed plastic.
I do get an intermittent vibe that goes away at 2000 rpm.
I am pleased so far. For the money, not sure. I think a good driveline shop could make you an aluminum prop shaft for reasonable price. And half the reason I went carbon was because there are very few choices sitting on a shelf. And even if they are, will it fit...
