I had my oil changed at the dealership - I take it there - they do it as should be done on a C5 - know how to lift the car and tilt the rear. Inevitably they find something new wrong. “Today” I need a new power steering rack. I know this subject has been addressed before; however, for peace of mind in case mine is hanging on for dear life I am asking -
What are my options and what am I conceivably looking for money wise?
I have been told they are not available, not rebuildable, very expensive.
The car is well maintained - the power steering fluid level is always right on - there are no leaks/spots on the garage floor.
It has 98K on it - we’ve owned since 2008 - we have no desire to sell it/replace it.
My wife and I are planning several road trips and obviously don’t want to get stuck in nowhere.
Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated. We are in Western Massachusetts and I have no problem driving to someone that will give me unbiased, factual answers. Any suggestions as to where to go for quality?
I’m not sure who told you they can’t be rebuilt. Contact Jeff at Turn One Steering. He’s the owner and they are the well recognized as the best in the industry. $350 for their full rebuild service. There is one “problem area” where the electrical connector comes out of the rack but they have a fix for that too.
You might want to consider upgrading the harmonic balancer while the rack is out.

What reason did the dealer give you for the recommended rack replacement? Is it leaking? I've been putting off changing mine (leak) so I could get some seat time. Found a local source (Phoenix Rack and Axle, $350) and actually got a quote for a lifetime unit from Autozone, I think it was about $300 but I want a little better quality. As mentioned above Turn One gets high marks from folks on this forum.
My steering rack leaked twice. Both times a new hose clamp fixed it.
The advice that you've been given about Turn One and a pre-emptive harmonic balancer replacement is good advice.
