The 2001 C5 vert takes 24 oz. of R134, (I doubt the 99 is any different) so evacuating first and adding a couple of 12 oz cans from any Auto store will fix you up, no guessing required.

Beware of the cans with the added leak sealant, it will gum up the orifice tube, better to find and fix the leak with the UV dye.

I usually replace the accumulator when I open the system up. This also gives you a chance to add the correct amount of oil.

Best of luck!

Lots of good information, but we're skipping the lead: there is a reason there isn't enough refrigerant -- you have a leak. Depending on size, it can make charging the system a complete waste of time. When I bough my '99, the system did pretty much exactly as you describe. Put in enough to reach pressure equivalent to ambient, fired it up, and it cooled just great -- for about 2 hours. A couple of weeks and a new compressor later and all has been fine for 2 years now...

Thanks C5 Diag, I jumped the relay contacts points as you posted and was able to run my fans and compressor.
I was able to get dye into the system today and it confirms a bad leak around the AC compressor.

Now I know what needs to be done

Thanks again for all who helped here.

When it comes to the amount of R134a, different years DO take different amounts, by weight. I don't remember the exact numbers for each year, but my 2000 vert takes 1.75lbs, or 28 ounces, compared to your 1-1/2lbs (24ozs). WHY GM did this is beyond me. There should be a sticker on the inner fender,, under the hood. Anyway, Rob knows his stuff, so whatever he tells me to do, when I do it, it works. He was able to figure out, with some input from me, that my C5 has a glitch in the custom dyno tune!! When stopped, my A/C compressor kicks off at least 3 out of 4 times, and every time if stopped long enough. We finally figured out the tuner did this because of the kinda radical idle of the custom cam!! NOT something that you can absolutely check out without something like HP tuners and a laptop. But we arrived at the conclusion we did by trial, error, and some common sense, usually Rob's!!! Anyway, I now have working A/C......
