For starters clean out the dirt/debris/leaves and plastic shopping bags from the radiator and A/C condenser. After that, check to see that the fans come on at the correct temp.

Also, changing the thermostat isn’t going to do anything for overheating

As said above Make sure the there is no trash blocking the air flow. Here is the factory settings for your fans
Depending on the model year...
For later model years:01-04
The low speed cooling fans are commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). They are turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fans are commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). They are turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fans will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).

For early model years:97-00
Low speed fans come on at 219,high speed fans come on at 228,low speed with a/c on..

Thank you for the quick responce. I believe it may just have been me overthinking it. If the High fan kicks in at around 236*. This would sound about right. The fans move freely with no blockage and they certainly kick on...

In the case of a stuck closed or late opening thermostat it sure will.

Gotta say what the coolant temp is, outside temp, standing traffic or moving, ac or no ac, air dam still installed, splitter, any mods to the car etc. “unusually hot” is too vague to help. 236 on a stock car in the winter is a lot worse than 236 in az summer 110° in standing traffic with the ac on full blast.

Low speed fans come on at 219,high speed fans come on at 228,low speed with a/c on..
My 1999 C5 matches what you say for the later cars, at least low speed fans coming on at 226, and back off at 219. Have not had it get hot enough to have high speed on fans come on, and even in Phoenix summers, one year A/C was broken, max temp I've had was 228 and that's at long red lights or drive thru.

One time at drive thru at Culver's, with no A/C pretty miserable, said it was 125 out on ambient temp on HVAC, felt sick and my iPhone shut down and had a message about shutting down due to excessive heat, after that tried to only drive at night.

With A/C on it stays under 210, and in winter ( no A/C) it usually stays right at 198.

Phoenix must be cooler than Lake Havasu and Las Vegas my high speed fans came on when I used to live in those 2 cities

You must have some mods to your car (160, upgraded rad, tune, etc). I’ve lived in az all 20 years I’ve owned my c5 and my all stock car routinely kicks on high fans in the summer.

After re reading what you originally said, about early models having different settings, I must be wrong.

This was the first time I have heard early years had lower settings, so I even did a search and saw Evil Twin say what you said, and he was somehow involved with C5 when they were built.

I swore the fan kicked on at 226 by watching the digital temp on DIC and see it lower to 219 and stop hearing the fan running, but it must be I was hearing the high speed of fans kick off and go to low speed, and low speed must not be as easy to hear from driver's seat.

A long time ago I noticed sitting at drive thru or long red lights with A/C there would be a surge, especially at night with headlights on, the blower motor would lower speed as the headlights dimmed then went back (for maybe a split second), it would do it every once in a while and must have been high speed in fans kicking in.

I have heard Lake Havasu is hotter than Phoenix, not sure about Las Vegas.

No, all stock, looks like what I heard thinking low speed fans, were high speed fans.
