Default Steering Column Bypass Needed?

HI All,
I just picked up a 2000 Corvette with only 40k miles in pristine condition. I absolutely love the car and am getting started with a few initial mods since it is all stock. I have read about the steering column lock issues on these cars. The car has no messages about servicing the steering column or anything like that. There are no codes present on the car at all. I just tried turning the steering wheel with the key out of the car and I am able to turn it freely. I am assuming this means that the recall was done. I was going to purchase an LMC5 module before I did the steering wheel test but am wondering if I even need it now. I don't want to mess with anything if its all in good working order. Do I still need this module or am I good?

pull the passenger side foot panel and see if an LMC5 was already installed also before buying one...

I just pulled the footwell and the LMC5 is not installed. Do I still need it though if the wheel turns freely? Doesn't that mean the dealer recall was performed? I just don't want to mess with anything when I am not having any issues.

the lmc5 is not the only design out there. There are others that mounted near the steering column that worked as well You will need to take the knee bolster down and look for a little black box that does not look OEM

There were a couple of column lock recalls during the years when GM cared about the C5. Service record at a dealer may give a clue

The column wont lock, but the chance of having the 2mph limp mode kick in is still there. The LMC5 will prevent THIS.

My battery was totally dead and now it’s showing that service column lock every time I start the car. Car runs fine. No issues at all. Is there a way to erase that message as the prior owner told me the steering wheel lock out procedure was done but I have no idea how so could that just be what the dealership recall was and there’s no LMC5 module there ? I will look tomorrow and see but I also read there’s other modules that could be installed by the steering column too. Any advice before digging into this would be appreciated
thanks

If your battery went totally dead, you may have killed it. Have it load tested at AutoZone or someplace. A poor performing battery can start the car but give you all sorts of codes.

Had it checked and back on a new tender as my old one took a crap. The car starts great and voltage is good etc. But that column message comes up every time I start the car.

The guys with the lmc5 are great. They will talk you through the install. I would recommend it simply because of limp. Mine had the message and now I don't have to worry about it. Just did it a few weeks ago. I highly recommend just doing it. Worth every penny.

I have it and still got the message recently. Cleared it by pulling fuse 25 in the footwell.

Did you leave the fuse out forever or just for the installation?

oh no. That’s the main BCM fuse. Basically reset the BCM and the service column lock I kept getting went away.
