My 2001 has an occasional starting issue that seems to be getting worse.
Some times it makes a fairly loud click then nothing. It always cranked and started
on the 2nd try, but one time yesterday it took 4 tries. I think the started drive is
hitting the fly wheel but I'm not sure. Had a similar issue with one of my John
Deere mowers. A new starter didn't fix it. The car has just over 12k miles.
From the symptoms you described it sounds like your starter solenoid or starter will have to be replaced. Not knowing your level of car knowledge and proficiency using a DVOM I can't offer more advice on troubleshooting.
One thing I forgot, have you checked the battery cables at the battery, the negative battery cable connection, and the cable connections at the starter solenoid. Make sure they are clean and tight. Hope this helps.

Yes, everything was clean and tight. Just hate throwing parts at a problem.
The car has never been rained on and is rarely washed with a hose, but then
again it's 20 years old.
THANKS

The only way to determine if it's your starter or solenoid is by placing a DVM between ground and the violet wire at the TDR socket and verifying 12volts is present when the key is turned to the start position. The TDR is the relay that sends power to energize the starter. The TDR is located above the BCM in the passenger footwell area. If there is 12v present then it is the starter if no voltage or very low voltage you should replace the TDR.
