I have noticed alot of mods listed here include a gear change to 3.42, i recently bought a Predator and am now considering a gear change. Where would be the best/safest place to have the work done? Dealership? Speedshop? Does it void the warranty? Most gear packages mention "direct bolt in" installation....but how true is that?
The vast majority of gear changes involve swapping the entire center section (carrier) with the gears already inside, the gears themselves are not removed from the carrier. If you are interested in 3.42 gears you can find them used on the C5 Parts for sale forum for about $500.00. As far as who to let install your gears, do some checking around where you live to see who has the best reputation for working on Vettes. Whether swapping gears will void your warranty that would depend on your dealer some are mod friendly some aren't. But if you don't tell the dealer more than likely he will not know.
A gear change should not void any warranty except for the gears themselves. Most warranty denials would have to show that the gears were the primary cause of the warranty problem, so engine, transmission, radio, clutch, etc. would not be considered a result of a gear change. And as mentioned above, most places would never know about a gear change unless you told them anyway.
You can get a whole new gear set from Andy at A&A Corvettes and then just find a good place to make the change.
