Default Security issues.

Hello all. I have a 2003 Z-06. recently I was driving and I noticed that the security light was on. I drove to my destination and turned off the car. I then tried to restart it and the gages cycled normally but the security light stayed on, and the engine wouldn't turn over. After about 20 minutes and numerous tries the security light went out and the car started normally. It then started fine for 2 days. On the third day it wouldn't start again for about 15 minutes of trying then it started. It was fine for most of the day and hours later it did it again, and after about 5 minutes of re-trying it started. I have a new factory ignition switch, the module behind it as well as 2 new keys that are all less than 1 year old. I have no idea what could be wrong, and any help would be appreciated.

I've been a C5 owner for less than a week, but have been reading up on my security indicator. Maybe your issue is related to the steering column lock feature that everyone disables/bypasses/performs recall work on. It thinks your key isn't right (incorrectly) and won't start. Maybe you're in the early stages of intermittence before a full blown "service steering column lock" message.

I hear a little voop when I turn my key and again when I take it out, presumably it's the column lock, but I don't think I can tell if it's already been bypassed because one method was to remove the actual locking part but it still goes through the motions. Hope that helps turn you in the right direction.

So everything was working fine for almost a year since you changed out the ignition switch and the lock cylinder ??...where were the new keys purchased and did you match them up to the old keys as far as the resistive values go ??...first thing I would check for codes through the DIC and maybe try cleaning the key pellet with some contact cleaner...you can start there.

As previously suggested spray some electronic contact cleaner on the keys resistor pellet and the front part of the switch and insert and pull key several times. The security light is controlled by the BCM, if the BCM does not receive the correct signal from the Ignition switch contacts that press against the key pellet it will turn on the security light and will not provide a ground to the TDR. The TDR is the relay that sends power to energize the starter.

This is how the slipring "reading" the resistorvalue in the ignitionkey looks like from rear .
If the pressure from the slipring getting weaker by the years due to wear it can be a good idea to carefully bend both slipring to get a tighter pressure in the resistorelement i igition key .

Also inspect /clean the slipring surfaces carefully can be a good idea to avoid these " security problems"

Also inspect the slipring wires for damage

I was able to go on you tube and measure the resistance of the pellet. Then I matched that with some resistors and installed them behind the dash in a jumper that goes to the BCM. Im fine now. these are the web sites I used.c5 corvette security light stays on - YouTube, and
. Thanks
