Just ordered a 6 speed ball shifter **** from ecklers, any tricks to getting the old leather off. 2000 convertible
You need to pry off the plastic cap (small flat head screw driver will do) that has the shift pattern on it. Underneath you will see a T shaped pin "demon key" that you need to extract with needlenose pliers or small vice grips (wiggling key forward and back while pulling up). Then you can spin the old **** off counter clockwise.

The 'demon' nomenclature is not in jest. Unless it's been removed before, that steel wedge is really, really jammed into the end of the shift lever. Use of a slide hammer is not overkill on the damn thing. Do not put yourself directly behind the pull methodology, whether pliers, vice-grips, or slide hammer, just to be sure you don't smack yourself in the face when it finally lets go.
I put a flat blade screwdriver (2 of them), one on each side with tip of blade under the lip of the demon key, and pry evenly on each side simultaneously. Comes right up pretty easy and won’t harm ****.
this is exactly how you do it. Much easier if you’re not worried about damaging the oem shift ****. Do not use pliers or vice grips. Total waste of time.
I did it in about 15 seconds with a pair of small vice grips. However, I do like your way better.
my guess is your demon key had already been removed then by a previous owner. Mine was never touched. Impossible to remove with vice grips.
I am the original owner of my 99 coupe. Bought it in 2000 and did the demon key in 2001 or 02. Locked the vice grips and wiggled forward and back pulling up as hard as I could. It came out fast but it wasn't easy. My buddy exploded in laughter because I almost socked myself in the teeth.
I also did it again with vice grips on my 99 FRC in 2016. Which I was not the original owner of. Again the key also came out fast but wasn't easy.
I'm also no stranger to moving big weight in the gym. Which I'm sure helped.
They have a key that can be a pain in the *** to get out good luck. It’s so much easier just buying a new shifter pull 4 bolts re attach and your good throw stock shifter in the pile of other stock parts for a later day

2003 Vet I where shifter was never removed --- in there for 22 years.
Tried the 2 screwdriver method and the vice grip method.
No Luck. I was ready to give up
then I got on the CorVette Forum and got some great tips.
PC Blaster. Wait 5 minutes. use 2 paint can openers and the Demon key comes out.
That's the only way to go.
