I've become addicted to road racing and find myself in the market for a harness bar and 5 or 6 point harness for my 99 coupe. Any suggestions as to which harness bar (Hardbar, R-D Racing, Brey-Krause) is best? I will probably leave it in the car so ease of removal isn't terribly important, but I would like to mount my digital camcorder on it. (Do any of them really stiffen the car more?)
Also, is a 6 point harness that much better than a 5 point?
What else do I need to buy besides the harness, bar and lap belt adapter?
Is the anything I should know about the installation and use of the harness? I have heard both that you ARE and ARE NOT supposed to run the shoulder straps throught the opening in the sport seats. Which is the correct method?

I have a BK bar and I like it. My C4 had an Arizona Speed & Marine bar...not as sturdy as the BK. I run the shoulder straps throught the sport seat opening...I think its OK as I've been through many tech inspections. Best way to attach the soulder belts to the bar is to wrap them around the bar.
If you have the sport seats the BK brackets for the lap and 2 point sub belt are a good choice.
Brey-Krause is one of the top and if you autocross, most inspection personnel see the Brey-Krause label on the bar and pass you no questions asked.
We only use the BK bar on our own cars when autocrossing or any other type of racing.
We have them in stock and ready to go.
Let us know.
Thanks!
Shawn
Materials: Type 304, stainless steel. Finish: Powdercoated in durable black wrinkle-finish. Weight: 18 lbs. Models: C5 Corvettes: will fit ('97 - present C5 coupes & fixed roof coupes). Installation: Bar attaches to factory mounting points in "B" pillars. Support rods attach to outside rear seat track mounting point.
I have the Arizona Speed and Marine Harness Bar. It works well. If you have the power seats check the air module under the seat, I had to relocate mine. Otherwise the seat would hit the bar for the sub belts. If you are over 5'10" then this would not be a problem. Seems like the module is different on the newer cars.
Mine has the camera mount as well.
The only minor issue, other than the module on the driver side, is the new attachment for the seat belt to the pilars, don't rotate.
Brey-Krause. In addition to the camera mount, you may also need the fire extinguisher mount, if you'll have tech inspections to pass. The brackets for the 6 point belts integrate well with the Vette, but will require a minor mod to the plastic trim near the seat belt reel.

I am a big fan of the R_D Racing bar. It sits high and far back. It also is very stiff as it has arms running down to the back anchor bolts. Our club had had a multitude of different bars but it seems like people have gone with R-D since they saw the first one installed. You can chek it our here: http://www.r-dracing.com/

I have the R-D also, I like it, and for the money it can't be beat.
Respectfully, I think you may have the R-D (crossbar) mixed up with something else as it's one of the few harness bars that doesn't restrict rearward seat movement.
I use the the harness bar from Gary Hoffman at Hardbar.net and it works great for me. Its the easiest to install in my opinion. Gary also sells the accessories such as a camcorder mount and a fire bottle mount.
I've got the C5 Brey-Krause Harness Mount Bar - great bar & is a very high quality piece - I also got the Brey Krause camera mount & Brey Krause fire extengisher mount.
I bought all of my BK equiptment from Shawn @ LAPD ..
I have the Brey Krause bar along with their excellent lapbelt mounts that allow you to clip in and out the lapbelts. This setup is PERFECT for what I wanted.. It takes up absolutely NONE of the passenger space, which was VERY important for me as there is just the right amount for me to be comfortable, being a bigger guy such as I am. Also, the lapbelt mounts allow you to remove and replace the lapbelts for when you want to use them. I do not use the harness for street driving so it is very handy to be able to unclip the lapbelt section of the harness and put it in the trunk until it is needed.
I hope I never have to crashtest this bar, but I really feel it is the best designed and built bar out there.. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The difference it makes in holding your **** in the seat when going around a roadcourse or autox is amazing!
