So this morning I got the pull key wait 10 seconds message after months of not having it happen. The car is a 1997 M6 coupe with a still functional steering column lock, last night was the first freeze of the season and seems to make sense as most if not all of the pull key messages occur during the cold months of the year. Just putting this out there to see if other forum members also observe this same thing.
If your column lock is still functioning(meaning the column locks when you shut off the car), I would order a bypass kit now. It is only a matter of time before you will be stranded. Just went through it on my 2000 with 47k miles...
Battery is in excellent shape, I belive the column lock relay is inside the BCM on a 1997, or is that not correct. I have debated about installing the bypass kit and have not done so because it is a M6 car and defeating the column lock feature would only make it that much easier for someone to steal the car. I may regret not installing the bypass kit, I have one on hand just in case

I had that happen for the very first time 2 weeks ago and the car shut off on it's own after putting gas. didn't even go 2mph before shut down. Pretty sure I caused it because I remember I partially took out the key from the point of the door chime turning off and reinserted the key.. Shut off 3 times on me and I caught the message briefly but I only removed key for like 5 seconds and we was back on the road.
HA! HA! HA! This just happened to me this afternoon at inspection. They wanted the car shutdown and me out of it. The inspector got in and fumbled the key and got the message when starting. He kept moving it forward a few feet at a time and then passed me.
I pulled the key out entirely, counted to 10, started it and left with my new sticker.
I belive you meant the EBCM as that is the module that you can't simply just buy a new one, and they are not easily repaired. Still puts a smile on my face when all 535 wheel horse power comes on. Lol

I had the pull key wait 10 seconds error message immediately after buying my car 4 years ago and I wasted no time installing the LMC5. I'm not sure which kit you have...but I believe the consensus is the LMC5 is the better solution (and it involves getting into the passenger footwell and installing it on the BCM). If your column lock is still working- in my opinion, there is a far greater chance that you'll find yourself stranded and in need of a tow than someone stealing your car. Best be proactive with this common issue; even if your kit is in the car and it has the wrench and everything you need to get it installed- you'd not want to attempt the installation on a rainy night in a poorly lit parking lot. You have a pretty good theft deterrent already- the manual transmission. My LMC5- installed (its the cylindrical device directly above the 2nd blue connection).
I will take my chances with the car maybe stranding me sometime, the LMC5 is a bandaid, a work around, I am far more interested in solving the real cause of the pull key problem, I fail to see why a M6 car is a theft deterant because at least on an automatic you can't shift it out of Park whitout the key.
Sorry, the manual transmission reference was meant as a "tongue in cheek" jest because so few can drive a manual. To get you started on your quest to solve the real cause of the pull key problem I can refer you to a Motor Trend article from 2008.
You'll see from that article that GM tried to solve the problem through various recalls and none them were effective; at least as they related to the manuals. The LMC5 (be it a band aid or cure) installation has disabled the locking mechanism on my car and it also has allowed me to start my car without the frustrating error message and shutdown at 2 mph. So I am a very satisfied customer and thought that worth sharing. As for taking chances... I 100% support your decision.
Thanks I thought you were serious about the M6 comment, I will take a read on the Motortrend article, I posted this because I was wanting to hear from other C5 owners why the pull key message seems to be more prevalent when cold weather sets in, I did not have a single pull key message for about six months.
