Just bought a 2004 and the first time I turned off the headlights they made a horrible grinding sound.
I replaced both plastic gears with brass gears and they no longer grind, BUT, when I turn the lights on and the doors open, I can hear and feel the motors still trying to run. Is there something that is supposed to tell the motors to stop when the doors are fully open or closed?
The motors run until the lids hit a physical stop and stall the motor. Headlight control module detects the stall and stops the signal.
Given that, it's possible your headlight control module is defective.

thank you! that's exactly what I was looking for. I'll check into it
I've done the brass gear thing in the past but the motors themselves seem to get rough over time. When I popped in brand new motors the difference in sound and smoothness of the actuation was noticable.
