Stock Air Box Mod ????? Need Advice
Afetr reading all the horror stories about hydrolocking, why can't you just cut or drill the stock air box and drop in a K&N ?
Wouldn't that make a significant difference and still be "safe"?
Anyone done this high cost "mod"....or isn't it cool ?

Forum member tshac did a great job on his. I've personally seen it and it looks and works great. Here's a link to pics of it.

Yes, you can do this and it will improve breathing. The cut/K&N mod was a standard on the C4 and it works well on the C5 too. :yesnod: :)

I did that to mine. Just make sure after you wash the car you dry the hood or all the water will get your filter wet. Nice free mod.

Re: Stock Air Box Mod ????? Need Advice (carpe dm)
I did this mod (along with removing my MAF screen) and noticed a huge SOTP power increase. I highly doubt any of the non-cold air intakes could make more than a marginal improvement over this mod. Do it!

After looking at the mod I'm not sure it's any safer (water wise) than a Blackwing. You certainly would need a hood seal to go with it to prevent water from dripping down into it. I put a Blackwing on my car and saved my stock airbox for when I have to bring my car into the dealer. You can swap them in about 10 minutes. That way, you can have your cake and eat it too. Happy Holidays to all the forum members...... :D

Re: Stock Air Box Mod ????? Need Advice (FYNL4)
I cut mine and felt it was a worthwhile mod. I bought someones factory lid and modified that (I try to retain all original equipment for who knows what?). Another good idea would be to purchase the newer Z06 lid & K&N combo, a few forum vendors sell the set (ken Fitchner sp?) for a little over $100. Should keep any water worries at bay!

Get some zip ties and go lid-less with your K&N. Make sure to pick up a hood-seal to keep out unwanted water. Here's how it looks:

Mike (dads01dream) I noticed you listed a sound insulation mod in your sig. Please tell me more as the one thing that annoys me about my 02 is the road noise. Thanks. :seeya

Re: Stock Air Box Mod ????? Need Advice (Electron Eagle)
I got this idea off a couple of Forum members. I purchased all the materials at Home Deptot, though I have not done the install yet. I have a couple of weeks off, soooo.... I hope to report some results later.
I would suggest doing a search. I bought the thin foil type insulation (kinda looks like bubble wrap) and raw pink insulation (no paper backing), oh and don't forget the duct tape. Some guys even used some spray-on adhesive, though I don't think I'll do that myself.
Many people have done this mod with GREAT success. I think out-o-pocket was less than $150?? Can't really remember for sure, but I think it's one of those "must do" kinda mods.
Let me know how you make out & if I can help you any further. Heck, a final thought would be to post a topic about this, I'm certain one of the guys that helped me will chime in.

However, I bet if I didn't have the hood seal then it would have been drenched! When I wash my vette and blow-dry it with a leaf blower, tons of water comes spewing out of the hood seal. Mine is a daily driver and I don't think twice about having the K&N with no air lid. IMO it's great mod and argueably has the same performance gain as a Blackwing.

Re: Stock Air Box Mod ????? Need Advice (vstella)
That thread was by blu-by-u.
I gave him the idea about doing that mod. He has since installed a Vararam and picked up .2 over the open airbox mod....
It is a cheap and easy mod, but the Vararam appears to give you more HP.
