Default Crank Position Sensor - Relearn necessary?

Good morning,

Replaced my crank position sensor last night. PITA. Car runs great. Is a relearn required? May have read that somewhere. Thank you.

YES, a crank relearn should be performed since the CKP is the engines’ misfire monitor…also for a harmonic balancer and PCM change…this is from the Factory Service Manual.

Thank you for your reply. Is is something I can do myself? If not, Where can I get this done? (Independent shop or dealer only?)

With a Tech 2 or any bi directional scan tool it can be done…an indie shop with that type of scan tool (which they should have) should be able to handle this…if they can’t they should close their shop and sell hot dogs for a living !!…maybe you can reach out in the NE regional section of the Forum and maybe someone may be able to help..the relearn takes 2 minutes to do.

Interesting to see the replies. I voted "no" based on my experience with my LS3 swap. I used a Lingenfelter converter box to convert the 58T reluctor signal to run with the LS1/6 computer that uses a 24T reluctor wheel in those engines. I didn't do any sort of re-learn procedure, I just cranked it and ran. If C5 Diag told me the car needed to be driven off a cliff to accomplish something I'd be the guy looking for the nearest cliff, so it's best to go with what he says!

You don’t have to agree with what I say but this is what the FSM says…if you see a P0300 with no misfires actually felt you need to do a relearn…doesn’t matter what engine you swapped into your car but if you understand the function of the CKP sensor you would be foolish not to accomplish this procedure !!

A little late now (several thousand miles, half a dozen track days, and one track crash on the car since the swap). I wonder if the converter box does some other magic other than converting the signal. I never got a P0300 or P030X for a misfire after the swap. I don't doubt that the FSM says what it does, nor do I think it's incorrect-- I was merely referencing my personal experience.
