Default need help deciding on mods!!!!!

Im new to vette mods.I have a 98 coupe w 85000 miles 6 spd corsa exhaust and a b&m shifter. I recieved a 2170 CHRISTmas bonus that can only be used at places that accept credit cards. iI found an asc certified tech who will trade labor for parts.I am buying him a cam and he is going to install my mods. Please tell me if you think these mods are a good or bad idea. I must order on monday. #1 ls6 intake #2 crane 1.8 roller rocker conv kit #3 donaldson blkwing #4 c5 lowering kit #5 80mm throttle body. If you think these are not good ideas pls let me know what you would do,where to get the parts and what gains to expect. If you agree with these mods pls tell me what type of gains to expect.BTW please dont ask me to save up for anything like a supercharger as I am not very patient !!!!! ;)

if you plan on going with a cam later i wouldn't go with the rockers. How much was the rockers? If it is more thn 600 I would just install a cam instead. My .02 But if you never plan on a cam that sounds pretty good. but I would go witha cam and new springs and pushrods. Epecially if the someone else is doing the labor in trade

Well, of all the waste of money mods out there, you picked two of them. The 80mm TB and rockers are a waste, like burning $1000 cash.

Blackwing + ls6 intake + headers would be a good start. FLP's will allow you to go back to stock since they come with all replacement parts meaning you dont have to modify your stock pipes, if thats important to you.

If you dont want the extra noise of headers, do a cam package instead for about the same price (or less) and get the same power, its just a bit more work for install.

Well I would find something that makes better use of a Professional to install. Like the cam, underdrive pulleys maybe , might as well do the oil pump while he is that area. Along with the LS6 intake and the blackwing , sounds like some good HP gains.
Gains 30-50 hp from what others have dyno'e :D

:iagree:

The Blackwing and the LS6 intake and headers are good mods. If you can afford it I would also put in a higher lift cam. Forget about the 80mm throttle body and rockers.

98 A4
Donaldson Blackwing
Cartek Stage 2 Heads
Cartek M Cam
LS6 Intake
TPIS Headers
Comp Push Rods
Underdrive Pulley
Borla Cat Back

B&M Trans Cooler

I would stay away from the TB. With 85,000 miles on your car I would be hesitant to install any power mods.

I bought the car to make it fast. 85000 mile vette for 17500. Its a toy nothing more. I dont know why i wouldnt mod it. If I was going to leave it stock I would have bought a 50 th anniv automatic conv. If something breaks I will just replace that part with something better.

A car with 85K on it will not last long if you add HP to it... Since you purchased it to hot rod with little money and you dont care how long it lasts. You could do a Cam install and get good results. Or you can install a 150 shot of NOS and run the heck out of it. You will have 471 to the rear wheels $1000 left over to buy NOS.

Best of luck to you and your mod decisions. :)

Ditch the rocker arms and throttle body for sure and maybe even the lowering kit. You dont need a kit to lower your car... :D

Get some FLP Headers - Cam - LS6 Intake - and an Blackwing Intake :yesnod:

curious why you folks think with 85K miles the car won't last long with mods? I'm just asking because my 99 Z with almost 70K Miles on her is still running strong as heck. Just curious as I'm looking to step up to a C5 soon and won't be able to afford anything with much less than 50K on the odomoter.

Thanks.

The more hp an engine is running, the shorter the life of the engine. HP creates more stress and friction on an engine. You already have an engine with 85,000 miles on it and it is worn. Adding more HP to it will shorten the life although it will run for a considerable time.

An extreme case of HP vs. engine life is a Funny car... lots of HP... very short engine life. Kinda like... this is your brain... and this is your brain on drugs. ;) Understand?

Best of luck to you moding your car with 85K on it. :smash:

Do a leak down test on the motor to see the condition and then cam and headers and intake. If it was properly taken care of 85 is nothing.

John, at what mileage do you consider a C5 unable to be modded Hp wise?

Just my humble opinion, but I wouldn't do the rockers or the 80MMTB or the lowering kit. You can lower the car plenty without a kit, and there are plenty of guys on the forum developing plenty of HP without the TB. You may want to put your money into a Cam or into gears. That 6 Sp will really move with a 3.90 or 4.10 rear end...

Anyone else? Again, this is just my Humble opinion.
