I was driving down the road two days ago when suddenly my engine shutdown. It cranked at a good speed, but not a hint of trying to start, so I had it towed home. I have gas in the tank and the battery is charged. I hooked a pressure gauge up to the fuel rail and turned the ignition key two clicks and can hear the fuel pump come on for a few seconds, but I don't see any fuel pressure. I cranked the engine for 10 seconds and no fuel pressure. On startup does the fuel pump run until a sensor detects fuel pressure or does it run for a predetermined few seconds and then stop? Can the fuel pump motor possibly separate from the fuel pump impeller? (2004, LS1, 187,000 miles).

The fuel pump runs for 2 seconds and is an output from the pcm, it is simply a timed output from the pcm. Unfortunately it seems you may have to pull the fuel pump, unless your having problems with fuel transfer from passenger side fuel tank, many corvette owners have experienced this problem. The fuel gauge will show fuel but the drivers side tank is empty.

I think you are correct. A few weeks ago I filled it up, drove 174 miles, and it simply ran out of gas.
Thanks!

If the car suddenly shuts down it “may” be a crank sensor…any DTC ‘s stored ??…while the engine is cranking check to see if you see the Tach move…this is a quick test that may point to the sensor…while someone cranks the engine pull the plug wire off the coil and hold it about 1/2 inch away from the coil pack…see if you have spark jump from the coil pack to plug wire…if no spark we can check for injector pulse with a 12 volt test light but let’s see if you have at least spark…spraying some Brake Kleen or starter fluid into a vacuum line like the PCV or brake booster will at least point you in the direction of fuel delivery but you said you have fuel pressure but if the injectors don’t open the car won’t start !!…just saw you deleted your post…is the car running ????

C5 Diag suggestion it may be the crank sensor is spot on. The same thing happen to my DD Murano. Had it towed to repair shop. They said it was the fuel pump in the gas tank. Just a mere $1500 to replace it. Went on line and someone had the same issue and it was the crank sensor. Cost, about $150 to replace. Told the shop to do the crank sensor and yep, that is what it was. No further problems.

If it is the fuel transfer problem, the PCM will drive the gauge to zero and throw a code for RH fuel sensor performance. Ask me how I know.
