Default Steering Column Noise

99 A4 Base Corvette

Ok, drove to work today and when I removed the key I heard a clicking coming from the steering column. I read the sticky, but didn't see an explanation of the process that happens to the column when the key is inserted(other than the locking issues). It happens when I put the key in and turn it to "ON" and when I remove the key.

I don't have any messages about remove key for 10 seconds. I can turn the steering wheel with the key removed, so I assume the previous owner had the recall performed.

A year or two ago I got the service column lock message, and couldn't drive faster than 2 MPH. After a day or two it went away and never returned.

Now I have this issue after having a dead battery and hearing every single relay click before I was able to remove the battery connectors. Battery was fully charged and everything works fine, except for this annoying clicking sound.

I'm going to go outside now and remove the #23 fuse under the passenger side footwell and see if that changes anything.

Sounds like the column lock mechanism operating. That would tend to indicate that this car has only had the GM TSBs applied.
I would recommend installing the LMC5 from Compliance Parts to prevent any issues in the future.
