I've seen posts of changing the gears and needing to clamp down the housing but I've also read that the early c5s such as mine with the 3 bolts don't need to be clamped down, just bolt and go. Is this true?

That is correct. The earlier models 97,98, some 99s have the heavier duty aluminum casing that has 3 screws holding it together. The later models came with plastic housing that is epoxied together.
My 99 coupe came with the later model housing that is glued.
