While replacing the Oil Pressure Sending Unit (OPSU) I discovered it had a new plug hacket into the vehicles wiring harness. I will rewire with solder and heatshrink tubbing. Because I do not know exactly why a new plug was installed I am affraid to put it all back together rewired and with a new OPSU (Gauge is pegged high) and discover some other deeper isue.
Can I rewire the plug install the new unit, remove the fuse for the fuel pump and turn the key on to see that the gauge is working? What does a working gauge with key on power look like?
As a side note I had a fair amount of oil in the intake manifold and on the intake manifold gaskets. The gaskets looked original and were very smashed flat. My heads intake runners have carbon build up. It lookes like a lot to me but I have no frame if reference. The car has 110,000 miles. I deleted my AIR system.
While the intake manifold is off, install an oil pressure sender relocation kit. Add a mechanical gauge to read real oil pressure. Next time the sender fails you won't have to pull the manifold and you will know the engine is fine.
A "catch" can may be a good idea, intercepts oil before going into the manifold.
I put one of these on my '55 Mercury, it was very well made.
