I got a new oval filter similar to the aftermarket oval air filter set-ups. I have the dual cone air filters but someone had told me they dont flow as good and cause maf turbulence. This is pretty small as well but bigger then a single air filter off the maf i think. Some of the aftermarket air intake setups have way huge filters overkill so hopefully i think this will flow just as good. Theyre 8" wide oval tapered 4" at the top so it doesnt lift the air bridge into the hood and 6" in length which should clear the hood seal area keep it free from dirt debris every time the hood is opened. I think it will outperform the ziptie mod as the surface area of the filter is just as large by the time measured open filter hopefully. Maybe get varam air bridge duct would be the last thing. Filter is 70$ 3.5" opening fits on maf sensor.
Ill probably be on my own on this one. Ive driven the car with a single round filter and it ran great. Reason is the dual cones sit just right up against the front beam allowing the hood seal dirt to fall on them not to mention rain between the hood and bumper. When i first got the car didnt have a hood seal at all so i see it as i was passing thru a heavy thunderstorm and turned around. It is a bit smaller then the aftermarket filters but i think it will flow alright the air opening on a stock intake isnt much or do people think highly of the 50$ ebay dual cone filters. I will say the filter material is of the same quality of the cheaper cone filters.
Basically the air cleaner is taking the engine bay, heated air and sending it thru the MAF into the TB then the Intake manifold. The speed of the air going thru the MAF determine how the PCM is going to change the functions associated with the intake manifold. On a stock engine including the heads, cam, injectors exhaust manifold, etc., the engine managements is going to run the car as if it had the original air cleaner and act accordingly. Going to an aftermarket air cleaner give many owners the satisfaction of a nicer looking engine bay than the stock system. A true ambient air cleaner system (using outside engine bay air) may have a more dense charge of incoming air and produce 3-5 more engine horsepower. The aftermarket air cleaner will also make more noise and many associate that with increased seat of the pants HP.
I was hoping for the 15hp someone claimed from the ziptie mod over the stock air cleaner box. That may not be the case.
The stock C5 air filter box is a restriction. If anyone wants to stay with an OEM look and OEM filter, the 2002-2004 LS6/Z06 filter, and filter box/housing is the least restrictive of the C5 OEM setups.. I still believe what you have there will flow more air than even the later Z06 units.......
thanks ive used even the small spectre cone filter on a 375whp small cam 6 speed 98 z28. I think this will work as its got more filter then one single round air filter. Has anyone used the dual cones people told me they were worse then the stock air filter box but i dont really know that information. A well known tuner told me they caused maf turbulence the y type or dual cone filter setups so i went ahead and changed it. I was just going to change the single cone filters to newer filters as i didnt know their age were already on the car when i purchased it and the previous owner didnt have a hood seal. Everyone else drives in thunderstorms with no problems with an aftermarket exposed air filter similar to this? He did state whatever intake i used needed to stay on the car with it tuned but may have been small talk.
Took the car for a drive today to see how the new air filter worked and if the power steering functioned. The power steering worked great then when i got up the street went back to hard steering at a stop. Not sure if the magnasteer wires from ebcm are backwards or whats going on. When i got back home car had hard steering. Maybe it is the bypass valve real weak spring under certain conditions or wears out gets tired quickly. Filter is 3.5" inlet 4"x8.75" base and top is 3"x8" 6" in length filter material. Sits angled up above the condenser air dam so it gets air from all sides. Has anyone cut a whole into the radiator front plastic dam to allow air flow to the filter would be added CAI when driving. Now for a tune lethal performance told me 520$ as well as lunatic performance 2-5 dyno pulls to get it tuned but would need me to drop the car off for a day. Lethal said itd take 2-3 hours and had a waiting lobby. Theres also nelson performance but he doesnt have a dyno so i guess it would be street tuned or uploaded similar mods tune file and liva data to confirm it worked lol. Volant has a 2 year warranty or 40k miles.
