When I start my 02 when it’s cold outside and put it in gear the 1287 code pops up. When it’s warm out side this code doesn’t pop up. When it does it when it’s cold I can pull over look at the code it says history, clear it and it doesn’t come back. What is causing this? Thanks!

more often than not, 1287 is the steering wheel position sensor. Be glad you have an 02. The part is still available. Only problem is,
it’s complicated to replace. Labor is about $500-$700 depending where you go.
I have the same codes for steering wheel position sensor. That kind of stuff should be done under recall if you ask me as common as it is. C1281 and C1286
I got that. Why only when outside temp is cold? Should I try an alignment first? Thanks!
I would say it’s merely a coincidence. You can unhook the electrical connector to the swps and gently clean it and make sure it’s connected securely. That has been known to help some (very few, but some). Alignment most likely won’t help unless your steering wheel is completely out of whack but that would be noticeable. Get on a straight smooth road and see if the steering wheel is straight. I’d say 9 out of 10 people that get 1287 needs a new swps. What will likely happen next is you’ll be driving and the ABS will kick on suddenly, the car will jerk and then throw the code. Be prepared for it. It can be pretty scary if you’ve never experienced before.

Thank you, It looks like more than I want to tear into.
67 degrees here in Texas, went and drove it, no code, It's definitely not a coincidence.
i applaud you trying to make a causal connection to a few degree change in the weather. In reality, it’s just a sign of a failing sensor. It will get progressively worse. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, looks like a duck, and there’s been tens of thousands of C5’s with the same problem…..it’s a duck aka swps.
alternatively, just blow on the sensor before you drive it. Should be good to go!
