How does a shift light work?
Can someone explain how a shift light does what it does? How does it connect to the engine? How do you set it to light at a certain RPM? Is it adjustable or do you order it set at a particular point? If there are different ways to get it to work, please explain the differences.
It connects to the tach wire in the harness under the dash along with switched power and ground wires. If you look at the Raptor Shift Light below, you can see the exposed circuit board. The dip switches are for setting the number of cylinders in the engine. There are two rotary switches for setting the shift rpm, one for rpm x 1000 and one for rpm x 100. These are set by the user and can be changed at will. When the engine hits the set rpm, the LED's are activated.
that is a link to our "Sequential" shift light. It comes on at 1/2 of the selected rpms, and goes from Green to yellow, as you approach your selected redline. Then when you reach your selected redline, all of the lights flash on and off, till you shift.
